Description Some folklore from my part of the world.

The Barghest (or "Barguest" as its also spelt) is a mythical/demonic monster resembling a giant black dog/hell hound with large teeth, large claws and fiery eyes. According to legends, the Barghest can become invisible and walk about with the sound of rattling chains, as well as been able to turn people to stone with a look.
Despite been most commonly identified as a type of black dog demon, other accounts of the Barghest describe it as looking like a rabbit, a white cat or a headless man/woman (who would vanish in flames). One of the creature's apparent weaknesses is that, like vampires, it cannot cross rivers.

Some stories of the creature have come from the market town of Darlington and the village of Houghton in the County Durham area. In West Yorkshire , a Barghest was said to haunt an area near the city of Leeds and in North Yorkshire , the seaside town of Whitby and the city of York have both got stories of the creature - including that a Barghest lives in a remote gorge called "Troller's Gill " in the Yorkshire Dales .

The Barghest has made several appearances in different media - both directly referred to as the Barghest or based off it:

  • In the book The Witches by Roald Dahl, it's stated that all Barghest are males.
  • A Barghest appears in the book The Whitby Witches by Robin Jarvis.
  • The short story Black Dog by Neil Gaiman features a Barghest with occult powers.
  • Barghest are the pets of a witch in the book The Child Thief by Gerald Brom.
  • My Dying Bride - a Doom Metal band from Yorkshire - have an EP called "The Barghest o' Whitby" (Listen Here ).
  • The video game Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning features the Barghest, which appear as packs of wolf-like monsters.
  • The PS3 game Folklore features the Barghest, although this one is more like a bear then a dog.
  • The TV Movie Devil Dog: The Hound of Hell had a Barghest (which in this case was a normal dog possessed in a satanic ceremony) called Lucky.
  • The TV series Roger and the Rottentrolls (which was set in Troller's Gill) had a Barghest as an antagonist. This version would only come out on the night of a full moon and could speak (first appearance here ).
  • The Roger and the Rottentrolls spinoff - Ripley and Scuff - also had a Barghest, although this one (called Bargy) was a friendly youngster.
  • The TV series Beowulf: Return to the Shieldlands featured Barghests, which are classed as been descendants of Dire Wolves .
  • In the Harry Potter series, the Grim (referred to as an omen of death) is based off the black dog/hell hound myths such as the Barghest, while Sirius Black 's nickname 'Padfoot ' is another name for the Barghest that is said to haunt near Leeds.

Thank you very much.

It's certainly not a creature that I would want to run into if I was ever in York or anywhere near Troller's Gill.

Well, merely SEEING them is meant to be a bad omen, so I don't blame you!

Very true. The last time I saw a Barghest was in the TV series Roger and the Rottentrolls and its spin-off Ripley and Scuff - which had a baby Barghest simply called Bargy.

Here's the first Rottentrolls episode where the Barghest appears: www.youtube.com/watch?v=-oGyAb…

I wouldn't be surprised if the 'black dogs' like the Barghest partly inspired him - not to mention his fate in the film is similar to that of the monster Fenrir in Nordic Mythology.

Agreed. I love reading about mythology - which is odd since Religious Education was one of the school topics I hated.

Me too and same here, but currently religious education is actually really interesting for me. even though I don't know what to believe: Exorcisms are really fascinating.

True that some of it was fascinating; I remember in Year 7 R.E watching a video about Noah's Ark which also covered other stories such as Adam and Eve. The part where Lucifer turns evil genuinely made me feel intimidated; whether that's because we've been 'programmed' to fear the devil or whether it's something else, I honestly did feel a slight pang of fear.
I don't know if the video is online or not.

The Barghest and other "Black Dog" demons are what the Grim is based off - both are omens of death.

It's amazing what mythology has inspired. Some of the stuff in J.R.R Tolkien's books The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings are inspired by/borrowed from British Mythology as well - such as Smaug been based off the Welsh Dragon (which is said to be sleeping under the mountains of Snowdonia in Wales).
