Thank you very much.
It's certainly not a creature that I would want to run into if I was ever in York or anywhere near Troller's Gill.

Well, merely SEEING them is meant to be a bad omen, so I don't blame you!

I wouldn't be surprised if the 'black dogs' like the Barghest partly inspired him - not to mention his fate in the film is similar to that of the monster Fenrir in Nordic Mythology.

Agreed. I love reading about mythology - which is odd since Religious Education was one of the school topics I hated.

Me too and same here, but currently religious education is actually really interesting for me. even though I don't know what to believe: Exorcisms are really fascinating.

True that some of it was fascinating; I remember in Year 7 R.E watching a video about Noah's Ark which also covered other stories such as Adam and Eve. The part where Lucifer turns evil genuinely made me feel intimidated; whether that's because we've been 'programmed' to fear the devil or whether it's something else, I honestly did feel a slight pang of fear.
I don't know if the video is online or not.

The Barghest and other "Black Dog" demons are what the Grim is based off - both are omens of death.

It's amazing what mythology has inspired. Some of the stuff in J.R.R Tolkien's books The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings are inspired by/borrowed from British Mythology as well - such as Smaug been based off the Welsh Dragon (which is said to be sleeping under the mountains of Snowdonia in Wales).

Yup, I knew that
That's great because he kind of rescued all those ancient legends. Very original and fascinating!
