Description The Scottish Surf Dragons used to be numerous and many. However, the 21t Century has shown less then 100 left in the wild. If this keeps up, the species will eventually be lost forever.
The surf dragons are one of the oldest of Earth’s Dragon species, primarily occupying the seas and lochs around the northern countries, although some have been seen further south. Scotland’s surf dragon is one of the last of the species.

The dragons themselves are long and serpent-like, much like the eastern dragons of China or Japan. Some even go as far to believe that the Loch Ness Monster is in fact a Scottish Surf Dragon.
The two sets of wings on the dragon’s back are not for flight, but for manoeuvrability underwater. They can be used separately with the webbed feet for extreme agility or together for sudden bursts of speed. The dragons are omnivorous, eating both plants and meat.
Despite this, they won’t harm humans and like orcas, even seem as curious of us as we are of them. There have been many stories among fishermen that the dragons help drive the shoals of fish towards their nets. Similar stories have been reported with dolphins.

It is believed that a sighting of such a creature will bring great luck to whoever sees it. This is one such belief. Another is that it is the dragons that are responsible for the idea of the Scottish bagpipes.
The reason for this is due to the bagpipe-like spines on their tail, which are used to attract mates and intimidate rivals.
Air is sucked through the dragon’s skin and pushed out of the pipes, creating beautiful, music-like sounds that are used during mating seasons. As well as this, the dragons show off using their brightly coloured wings and large antlers.
When showing off isn’t enough, the males ‘wrestle’ each other into submission. The antlers aren’t capable of withstanding the intense pressure that rutting animals, such as deer, can take.
When the battle is over, the victorious male wins the right to mate. The mating takes place at night, with the dragons mating in the same way as snakes by intertwining their bodies together.

When it comes to laying eggs, the females have a unique method. Coming to the cliffs, they climb up onto the land before digging a deep pit. Laying their eggs within, they then cover the pits with mud to insulate the eggs, then use their ice breath to freeze the top and prevent animals burrowing through to expose the eggs. The young will later hatch and dig their way out before making their way back to the waters.

The dragons seem attracted by the sound of bagpipe playing, even mimicking the sounds using their own ’instrument’. Unfortunately, and despite the efforts of many, this attraction proved to be a severe weakness for the dragons. Hunters from overseas used this method of attracting the dragons to lure them, before killing them with various weapons.
The dragons almost went extinct, but actions taken by groups around the world has helped to save the species, and it now slowly begins its road to recovery…
