The Wayfinder (GBaSTW, part 5)The sea was going to swallow up Funafuti soon. Naama had been rowing the islands of Tuvalu and beyond for years, trained as she was in the wayfinding of the ancient Polynesians. The king tides were creeping higher and higher each year, and as they did, they reclaimed a bit more of the sand and soil of the atolls. The coral rock that once held the islands together had begun to crumble. Many Tuvuluans had left--friends, family, neighbors--for America, for China, for wherever the sea could not find them.
But Naama had pledged herself to the ocean when she had learned the old wayfinding traditions. Polynesians like her could navigate the vast oceans by watching the movement of the stars, the waves, the winds, the birds (when they came). Her old master had even helped her build her own outrigger, the traditional tiny canoes that could nevertheless cross the entire sea. Naama could never leave that life behind, not until the sea had swallowed Tuvalu altogether.
