Description just a quick and simple outline to how I choose colours ;;
download for a larger view if needed

It's not meant to be comprehensive, just doing the quick "guide at a glance" thing like my other guides!
will be doing a hand part #2 soon, focusing on the shapes that make up the hand /o/

hope it helps someone out there, even just a little! ovo

Disclaimer: This is just how I do it; some people out there prefer using darker shades of the base to colour, or they prefer using saturated colour to achieve a bright neon effect. It's ultimately up to you!

thanks for viewing ^^

i would say this below below is a good example of what I mean haha:

====

Edit: to avoid any future misunderstandings, this is only how I colour. Please don't take it as me saying this is the only way, or the right way. Some watchers were just asking how I colour/choose colours, hence why I made this.
I have tons to learn myself, and I think I've only scratched the surface. You are free to colour however you want

I think everything depends on the environment and stylization..

It's extremely sad to realise that the last drawing I made has muddy or dull shading..

I can suppose your tutorial can help me, but I'm not a fan of red-blue shading, which you find correct. I just believe everything depends on environment and on the taste of the artist..

AngelKite In reply to matarioshka [2018-10-21 13:57:15 +0000 UTC]

If you read what I wrote in the drawing itself, I said that people can experiment by adding colours from the environment since shading also depends on the environment
also if you read the description of the drawing, I added this:
Disclaimer: This is just how I do it; some people out there prefer using darker shades of the base to colour, or they prefer using saturated colour to achieve a bright neon effect. It's ultimately up to you!

You are free to colour however you want; my style isn't any more "right" than yours. Some of my watchers were just asking for how I colour/ choose colours hence I made this

SvenReinold [2018-10-21 13:41:29 +0000 UTC]

Interesting. When I paint base colors i tend to use values between 30% and 70%. You are using your skin color with almost 100%. Now I don't know which one is correct.

AngelKite In reply to SvenReinold [2018-10-21 13:58:53 +0000 UTC]

what do you mean by 100%?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SvenReinold In reply to AngelKite [2018-10-21 17:46:06 +0000 UTC]

Your chosen color has the value of almost 100% white.

AngelKite In reply to SvenReinold [2018-10-21 22:50:40 +0000 UTC]

Sorry, I’m really not sure what you mean

This is the skin colour I used, what do you mean by 100%?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SvenReinold In reply to AngelKite [2018-10-22 07:54:16 +0000 UTC]

In the square the circle is almost at the top. That vertical black to white is the value. and it is almost 100% white. You have three types: hue, saturation and value. The hue is the rainbow circle, saturation is from full color to white and the value is the brightness, so the black to white. If I say it is almost 100% white means it is almost at the top.

AngelKite In reply to SvenReinold [2018-10-22 08:05:45 +0000 UTC]

well that would depend on the skin tone, right? xD someone who has a darker tone will have a darker colour. I prefer choosing a mid-range tone (towards the middle of the square) so the colour isn't too dull haha.

SvenReinold In reply to AngelKite [2018-10-22 08:13:27 +0000 UTC]

I learned from Aaron Blaise, that you use a base color with a value of 30%-70%. Because it has to have light areas and shadow areas on to. I paint the light with a yellowish-white. The images look pretty dark though.

AngelKite In reply to SvenReinold [2018-10-22 10:21:48 +0000 UTC]

depends on what colour you're trying to achieve, no?
doesn't make sense when colouring lighter or pale skin tones in a lighted environment haha

Thank you for this lovely tutorial! It is simple, but that's what makes it wonderful. The multiple examples really illustrate your point and give great reference for saturated vs. unsaturated.

Flora-Tea [2018-10-21 03:33:29 +0000 UTC]

This is so helpful!

When it comes to shading, the color I use tends to be a darker version of whatever color is closest to the color of the overall environment. For instance, if the character is in a night setting I'll use dark blue or purplish blue set on Multiply to shade. If the character is in a sunset setting, I'll probably end up using brownish color for shading.

AngelKite In reply to Flora-Tea [2018-10-21 05:44:48 +0000 UTC]

Yep the environment will influence it too! ^^

Thestar78956 [2018-10-20 17:25:58 +0000 UTC]

Ahh this is really helpful to someone who is almost always terrible with how to shade or lighten something >W<.

I used to shade with a darker tone of color but since i normally do cell shading as my prefered shading technique im finding that using purples and reds doesn't always work with every character i draw =w=. But i will definitely test this out on the next chance i get!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AngelKite In reply to Thestar78956 [2018-10-21 01:59:31 +0000 UTC]

yeah, sometimes having too varied a colour to shade looks odd! Instead you can just change the hue slightly, so it's a more purplish-blue when shading blue, or an amber when shading yellow for example ^^

best of luck!!

Omg I was just thinking about how much I needed to learn about coloring! This tutorial is awesome Quick question though, when it comes to coloring, or at least choosing colors, do you create a palette? Or do you just kinda "go with the flow"?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AngelKite In reply to pyrooma [2018-10-20 16:01:02 +0000 UTC]

haha I just replied your forum post actually! xD
hope this helps too!!

ah, I don't create a palette; I just go with what looks good to my eyes! And when shading I always change the hue on the colour wheel so it doesn't look dull haha

RasheruSuzie [2018-10-20 15:43:32 +0000 UTC]

The super yellow-blond guy with the black shirt actually looks pretty good to me haha, but yes it's very true people should be wary of over-saturating, especially with more realistic styles! Very good tips ^^b

I look forward to more hands next time : D

AngelKite In reply to RasheruSuzie [2018-10-20 16:02:37 +0000 UTC]

HAHA I think it's cause the shading of his hair is more orange than a darker shade; I changed the hue and forgot to change it back to the darker shade ;u;
yes, indeed! ovo

ahh hope I can explain it well xD gonna try the wrists too!
