Description This started as a drawing while listening to "Tears of a Clown"[Smokey Robinson]...I thought how lovely the images were, but so cliched...I decided to try & do my own version of the story,& this little character evolved along the way, requiring me to add one of my favourite poems by Yeats, because I think it's appropriate....I imagine this little jester is the archetypal fool, but in this case he is a tragic, abandoned marionette, waiting for the world to notice his artistic soul.....so he has whispered all his hopes, dreams & fears into a glass heart & sends it out into the world to share his dreams.....

Aedh wishes for the Cloths of Heaven

HAD I the heavens’ embroidered cloths,
Enwrought with golden and silver light,
The blue and the dim and the dark cloths
Of night and light and the half light,
I would spread the cloths under your feet:
But I, being poor, have only my dreams;
I have spread my dreams under your feet;
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.

W.B. Yeats (1865-1939). The Wind Among the Reeds. 1899.

(Pencil & Watercolour, but a fair amount of brushes were used to create the bg & add sparkle in Photoshop...oh,& I painted the glass heart,it's not a sweet^^[])

OH MY GOD! W.B Yeats! When I saw the title of this picture, I had a sneaking suspicion it was related to his poem. My favourite one of his is 'The Stolen Child'. His work is quite beautiful, don't you think?
Oh, and so is yours XD. Sorry, I meant to say that at first, but got sidetracked...yeah. The image is cliched but I haven't seen it done so well as your work here. It reminds me a bit of a picture book I used to have about glass hearts and princesses...

Oh,I'm obsessed with Yeats!!......his gyres, his celtic twilight..I've always planned a really big painting based on the Second Coming[one day!?]..it's SO evocative...
"Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;/Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere/The ceremony of innocence is drowned./The best lack all conviction, while the worst/Are full of passionate intensity." I do like the Stolen Child,he had a great range!
Thankyou for your kind comments...it was indeed my intention to try and subvert the cliche!

Omg please do a painting for that one! I think it could be amazing! I love Yeats too. Even his life was interesting. I mean, he went to a medium once to get in contact with the Queen of Faerieland! How cool is that? Crazy wonderful man...

I love how you always manage to give your
works that weathered look and then contrast
with that gleen of the eyes and other objects
in the piece. The detail in her bodice is superb and all the ruffles... Always lovely
She's so sweet. Reminds of all those melodramatic moments of self pity we like to have for ourselves here and there. The poor dear. She looks as though she's in need of a hug
Gorgeous art

...yes,it was drawn for a friend of mine who's having a bit of a 'poor me' phase,....I always think that if we're all hostages to fame & fortune, you can only work to please yourself in the end?...so it was that..."all alone in the world look'...but then I got carried away with the costume,
Thanks darling,all s are appreciated...I'll pass them on...this might have a sequel,I'm not sure....

Ooh then I patiently await the possibility of that sequel
Hopefully your friend is feeling better these days
Amen to that, I don't think I would like the summit of fame,
but maybe for the rest of my life to be the climb (=

...yes,I pity people to whom success comes early,it's too easy to be a has-been...I've only ever wanted moderate cult status myself, then you're not tempted to sell out for the trappings of fame
And my friend is much better...I've encouraged him to take a practical step,& he's going to do jewellery art &design[in no way motivated by the fact that I'll be his No.1 customer, lol ]

Moderate cult status sounds perfect

very nicely done. the poem is quite fitting (or should i say the picting is fitting to the poem?).

i like alot how your style gives your characters such a wooden, doll-like feel, but they seem so alive at the same time. it is quite amazing.

HEART BALLOON. (ohh, how it cries to be pricked! But ohh, his face is so mournfully sweet I'll have to repress my cat tendencies XD)

I loveeee, as usual. I love how you've managed to capture the dreamy nature of the whole concept (it's very pretty, yes). It's surreal and beautiful and for some reason reminds me of clockwork dolls XD

AngelusNoir In reply to catewigs [2007-04-18 02:15:15 +0000 UTC]

*POP*..........,he'll need lots of s now,but I know,it's irresistible
Yes,the clockwork dolls is an interesting idea....I love old mechanical pieces, they have that pretty/creepy thing[we have lots of dolls, puppets & marionettes around the house,& sometimes they look eerie at night,]...I rather imagined him as a half-finished project that has come to life, but doesn't know what to do,but has all these artistic ideas to share...there might be a sequel,I'm thinking about it?

DimiSirus [2007-04-16 05:00:10 +0000 UTC]

wow, I love the idea behind this. The drawing is wonderful and detailed as always...I love the kind of 'melloed' warm colors, it brings a nice soft feel to the peice.

The idea with him waiting for the world to notice his artistic spirit kinda reminds me of Sydney Carton of A Tale of Two Cities....sorry--love that book, hehe.

Amazing in the downloaded view - the background black looks almost like wax or very precise charcoal. There is so much detail - what size was the original ?
