Description
This is an elk sculpture I was commissioned to make for the local Archery Society's annual get-together.
This is quite a bit larger then the previous sculptures I've made, roughly 18in tall x 18in long.
Since this is for a special function, I spent some extra time making the base really nice, decorating it with jumbled rocks, grass, and a few bushes. Made the tree larger and extra leafy (kinda hard to see that with these photo's. The camera angle wasn't very good for seeing the tree bushiness)
The antlers were also a new thing for me. Before they were just cut out of sheet metal and I bent them to shape. These are made from round bar and textured, then ground smooth. Really like how they turned out overall.
Ran the texture welds along the elk in diagonals, hopefully giving it a more 'fur' like appearance then just welding 'dot-dot-dot'.
The coloring on the elk was a mix of Golden Rust and Antique Red-Brown patina. Sadly... the coloring did not come out quite how I wanted. The body was suppose to be a light golden brown, while the head and neck would be a dark brown. But somehow the 'dark brown' on the head came out very golden brown... and the body turned a lot darker... and the Antique Red-Brown turned slightly bluish in a few areas... not sure why it does this, but it does... I think the only thing that worked out how it should've was the elks rear end... cuz elks have lighter colored fur back there, I made sure not to get much patina there. lol
Tree was a spattering of Copper Plate, then metallic green spray paint, followed up by a dusting of metallic gold, to counter-act the intense green and give it a more 'autumn' feel.
And finally everything sealed with a satin clear coat to protect it.
It turned out quite handsomely. Really hope everyone likes it. I'm including a bunch of my business cards with this, so hopefully it'll lead to some extra work this summer.
------
On a side note... getting really frustrated with my lack of a photo area. My previous backdrop isn't really functional for my current set up, so I'm trying to find other means of getting photos of my work. But quite honestly... I can't afford a good photographer. I have no lighting equipment. No good, blank back drops. And my camera sucks. So right now I'm having to use whatever I come across, and the results are less then awesome (had to use a white shower curtain for this). Hopefully I'll be able to figure something out so I'm not stuck with terribly photographed sculptures.
Also, check me out on Facebook!
