Desert rain smells different. Not like sweet pine forest rain or crystalline sea-side rain. It smells acrid and dirty. It's the scent of withered vegetation scrambling for every haphazard drop. The scent of dry air choking free of the dust it has grown accustomed to carrying. The scent of the dried corpse of the earth gasping back to life for a mere moment only to return to its grave unsatisfied.

Desert rain smells different.

Jim laughs when Spock tells him so. Jim assures him it only takes getting used to. But Jim misunderstands. Spock is more than used to the smell of desert rain. It's the scent of a kahs-wan night spent curled beside I-Chaya, the scent of lazy afternoons reading science journals on the balcony, the scent of his mother's lullabies.

And now it is the scent of Jim and Spock on the hood of Jim's car on the road back to San Francisco. The scent of Jim asking permission by taking Spock's hand. The scent of Spock tilting his head in the most minute reply.

And Spock thinks he'll never have enough of the scent of desert rain.

Also, I'll have you all know that there is literally a typhoon happening outside right now. Like, my host family have steel shutters on the windows. Definitely not what I'm used to (I'm used to the desert rain).
