As a child I was really surprised to find out that Sooty was around when my parents were young.

I first found out about that when I visited my grandma once. She gave me a drink in a cup which had Sooty playing a xylophone on it.When I asked about why she had a cup with Sooty on it,she told me that she had bought it for my dad in the 1950s.

I used to like going to the World of Sooty Museum on the outskirts of Shipley near Bradford(which is now long closed). You could play with replica puppets and set from the TV shows as I remember

I always watched the Sooty shows on TV too when I was small, but as the years went on they became a little too samey for my liking sadly.

Scampi is the only 'newish' character I recognise in the picture. The others must have all been introduced after I stopped watching the TV series

Yep, it's amazing how long the 'Sooty' franchise has been around.

A shame the museum is closed as I would have loved to have seen it as I didn't know it had existed.

All the other characters are ones from the older series but Miki (the grey cat) and Butch (the dog on far right) did make a return for the 'Sooty Heights' TV series in the 2000s, although even I wasn't all that fond of the series. From what few things I've seen of it's current incarnation, things have improved somewhat.

Thanks for telling me about those characters I didn't recognize.I've never seen any of the post Matthew Corbett programmes.

I last saw Matthew on a TV series involving canal boats. It was interesting series and there was a part where he was playing a stringed instrument like a ukulele. That bit seemed to suggest his hands were a lot better than I had expected them to be.

I was under the impression he passed Sooty onto a new person was because he had some condition that had caused his hand function to decline. In other words he couldn't do any puppetry.

Someone on the internet said the disease was called Raynaud's disease which affects hand circulation. But I think the other major reason why Matthew had to give up was him being diagnosed with Leukaemia (forums.digitalspy.com/discussi… ).

I'm glad he recovered and  survived Leukaemia.

Although it's sad that Sooty didn't stay in the Corbett family,I'm happy children of today can still see new TV shows with him in.
