Description recently (well...more like about a month or so ago), i picked up several 'how to draw' type books. most of these were compilations of a series of books that Antarctic Press released.

at first i picked it up because it was written by Ben Dunn and the God among American Manga, Fred Perry. this is nothing against Ben Dunn (who is a veritable God himself), but i have never met Ben, much less sat down and hung out with him...im sure that Ben is just as cool and generally kick ass as Fred is...but for now, i pay only true homage to Fred

...anway, after flipping through some of these books and actually *gasp* reading what had to be said, i started screwing around at work, and this is one of the results of that boredom. i know its not much to look at really, but i feel i should do more stuff like this...most notably with working on action poses for final works and the female form.

yeah....i have a long way to go i think...:fainting:

Not at all! That's what that sort of stuff is for. I'm glad you found it useful.

I believe that they were the "How to draw manga" compilations (as opposed to the 'how not to draw manga'). I know that there are 4 of them in total.

I am sure that you can find them on Antarctic Press' website: [link] ...though you MAY be able to find them online or in some book stores.

I may take a look, thanks!

Well, the 'How NOT to draw manga' books were done that way on purposes...at least to my understanding anyway. They apparently were done as both a sequel and pointing out all the crappy mistakes that people do and how to avoid them.

Frankly, I didn't find the 'How NOT to draw...' books useful enough to purchase.

There are MUCH better tutorials, poses and such running around here on DA than what I've got, but I appreciate the thoughts nonetheless. Thanks

I hope what I have does help you though.

Those "how to" books really are a godsend! and so are you for these poses! these will help a great deal with my current project!

which is your favourite "how to" book currently?

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

AnimeFreak40K In reply to sanzo-supreme [2009-06-09 21:49:42 +0000 UTC]

Well, I have all 4 of the compilations (that I know of) from Antarctic Press...and I have far too many others to really count accuratly

To say that I have a favorite would not do the books themselves justice. I mean, it really depends on what I am trying to work on at the time. I have a couple of books on forms, poses and such, others for fashion, some for techniques and others still for character design concepts.

I can't have a favorite as they are all equally useful when I find the need for them.

Thats sweet! i have a fair few myself actualy, and like yourself would find it hard to have a favourite because they all have different material in them! ^-^

Although along side these 'how to' books i find it helps to have a few Manga books at your fingertips relating to your work for poses and clothing help

Yeah, I have about 6 or 7 "How to Draw Manga" within reach right now... and there is easily that many more in another room.

Heck, for some methods of inspiration I don't even have "How to" books handy, rather I have various artbooks, RPGs and other stuff for that too.

Lots of useful information if you just know where to look ^_^

whoa! i only have about 4 xD ahaha but roughly about 44 Manga books though.

LOL i know what you mean! once i was looking for a certain pose, a fighting girl pose, and i looked through all 7 manga i had of battle vixens (ikki tousen) and couldn't find anything i wanted! so in the end i put mixtures from battle vixens and a certain how to manga i had!

Which is why i like how u compiled all these poses into this piece! its gonna help a lot of people around here!
