Description I was so excited for Ponyo because I envisioned something really awesome, but then so many things went wrong in the process.

I initially thought of putting ponyo in a circular jar, but then her reflection got distorted so I got a rectangular jar. Then I had the idea of having her head poke out of the water but then the reflection got distorted again T-T... so I completely submerged her, which made positioning her difficult as well. I had to pour wax halfway, wait for it to cool, figure out the right consistency that is appropriate to place her in, hold her until the first part of the wax appropriately hardened (which was 15 min and resulted in an immense hand cramp) and then poor the rest of the wax on top.

This was actually my fifth attempt and I'm not happy with it, but it is beyond savable now . The figurine of ponyo itself was nice, but then I think the quality of it went down due to the wax. Let alone the uncontrollable appearance of the many bubbles, the wax also washes out the vibrant colour. Sighhh.... so many things went wrong...

Additionally... she's not looking at the camera! I intended for her to look up, which is why her eyes are directed upward, but then I kept moving when I had to hold her and wait for the wax to harden. As a result, she actually ended up being mispositioned

Anyways, I'd appreciate your comments. Out of all my sculpeys.... i'd say she was the least successful

did you think about using clear resin instead of wax?

I am thinking about making a Ponyo in this same fashion as a gift for dear friend. Any tips on creating the 3-D Ponyo character out of clay? I just love this piece.

Sorry for the late reply. A tip I'd give is try to build Ponyo in pieces. I do this for all my sculpeys. I'd do the main part first (like the head), bake it, then add on the details (like the hair) and then re-bake it. If you bake it at a low enough temperature, nothing will burn. Then I'd do the body and when you're ready to put everything together, I'd glue it with either super glue or the translucent sculpey bake and bond. I find that baking things and adding as you go is a good trick because the clay becomes solid after baking. So you won't have to worry about putting too much pressure in your fingers (which results in morphing the piece) as you try to add the detail.

Ah it's really nice, but I'm sorry the wax and stuff didn't work out for you! D: If it's any help at all, my mom used to do a lot of fake water stuff where she'd used liquid acrylic, and she never had a problem with it. It'd probably be a lot more stable than the wax and wouldn't be prone to blistering when it cools! O: I hope that's helpful and I hope your next attempt comes out like you wanted it! <3

I actually really like this! It's a great idea and I think it was executed well! The bubbles actually bring it to life, as if she's really swimming around! Great job <3

In a way really like how she has the bubbles around her, if I had that next to my bed it would almost feel like she was my little fish XD
Maybe do it again in a jar but have her sitting on some coral?
Is it friendly with water? Like would the paint peel or anything? Because if you had her on coral and then added water it could look really cool! I would still totally love this the way it is! you do amazing work!!!

I can see why working on this was so dificult. Although it's not how you imagined, I still think it amazing

I think she looks adorable! The bubbles make it look like she's really submerged in water. Maybe it's cuter that she's looking up - then when you'd be holding the jar, it looks like she's looking up at you!

Aw, thanks. Yeah, the whole thing started to grow on me. But the next day, the wax created even MORE bubbles, which surrounded her. She looked like she bursted out into blisters >_< I decided to scrap her, sadly.

T_T! Poor Ponyo... Well, live and learn, right? You can make her 10x better already if you want to.

Hm... still looks pretty good, though. The bubbles make it look a bit more like water, almost as though you just plopped her back into the water. I do see your point with the positioning, but it still has an overall cute appearance.

Aww, thanks. Your comment makes me feel better. I agree that she still has an overall cuteness to her but if you saw her out of the jar... she's SOOOO much cuter. lol. I'm thinking of redoing her actually.... outside of the jar... we'll see T-T But thanks for the comment
