(Set when you and Loki are about 10 years old)

The world was filled with beauty and color. People and places that were captivating and breath taking. But you could not see any of it. Born blind, all you ever knew was darkness. All you ever wanted was to see; to understand what it meant when people talked about colors.You were the daughter of a highly known and respected Asgardian official. It was a tragic loss when your father perished during a battle against the Frost giants but because of your name, you and your mother were given high privileges. But they were hardly much compared to the privilege to see.

You walked through the gardens of the palace looking for someone. Despite your lack of vision, you knew all the paths and turns because you had walked there many times with one of the young Asgardian princes. You knew he would be more than glad to satisfy your fancy about the world. With you, he felt important, he felt needed. With you, he wasn’t second best.

You reached out your hand and touched a couple of roses. You knew that the roses were planted near one of Loki’s favourite places to relax in. “Loki?” you called out. But you heard no reply. “Ouch.” you hissed as you felt your finger prick on thorns from the rose bush.

“Tsk, tsk, tsk.” you heard a voice from behind you. You smiled as you knew exactly who it was.

“Loki!” you smiled happily.

“You are a clumsy one, aren’t you Y/N?” he teased but you didn’t hear the voice come from behind you. Instead his voice came from your left. “What may I do for you, milady?” that time, his voice was heard on your right. He was playing you. He was a trickster after all and he was always amused at how confused you would be sometimes. Some days, you would find it cruel but days like this, you found it endearing. His way of affection, perhaps? You both were an odd duo; a blind girl and a trickster prince.

You winced at the slight sting in your finger but decided it was best to ignore it. “I wanted to talk to you about something.” You hesitated. You wanted to ask many things; to know what the world was like. You wanted to see as normally as anyone else. You wanted to know what he, your closest and only friend, looked like.

Your hesitation brought out a new found curiosity in Loki. “You can ask anything of me, Y/N.” He had a way with words. He knew many things and was well educated and it was probably why you liked his company so much. He always had stories to tell you about the different realms or about his forefathers. It was always so interesting.

“Could you read a story to me?” you asked shyly. You heard Loki laugh and this time he took your hand that was still bleeding. “Is that all you wanted?” he smiled as he lead you to where he kept his favourite books.

(Timeskip to a couple of years Pre-Thor events)

You had terrible news. You knew it would upset Loki but you knew it was best to tell him personally. You were both the closest of friends. In the past few years, you had spent much of your time together. But what had happened during a family meeting between you and your mother was something that could tear you both apart for good.

You sat on one of the benches in the palace’s gardens. It was your favourite spot because it was secluded, calm and your special place. You held out a piece of paper and whispered “Please meet me at the gardens” before you felt the paper twitch and fold into a bird. It was a simple trick that Loki had taught you; a way of contacting each other. It flew in some direction the moment you let go. Now you waited. And as you did, you started to reminisce.

“What story would you like Y/N?” Loki asked as he let go of your hand and you sat on a bench. It did not take long for you to decide.

“Tell me how the world was made.”

Loki looked slightly confused by shrugged it off before he began reading aloud to you just as you asked.

“After ages of warfare, Odin and his brothers slew the Giant-King and forged the world from his remains.” Loki read aloud the text. He looked at you as he closed the book.

“Is that really how the world was made?” you laughed.

“Father is all powerful.” Loki replied. “Why did you want to know that story anyways?”

You pouted. The prince of mischief was quite observant. Despite not even knowing what he looked like, you knew he was starring at you intently. You hesitated before slowly replying. “I just, I wanted to know what the world looks like. All I’ve ever seen is darkness. I want to know what the night sky looks like, I want to know how to read..” You paused. “I want to know what you look like.”

You felt embarrassed and a little teary eyed but then you felt Loki grab both of your hands and lead you somewhere. “Where are we going?”

“To Heimdall! Maybe he can share his vision with you!” He said so eagerly.

Your fond memory of that day helped ease the anticipation and tension you were feeling. You and Loki did meet Heimdall, the gate keeper and asked with the purest intent if he could somehow share his gift to you even for a moment. You shook your head remembering how shocked but calm the gate keeper was. He apologized so sincerely and you knew it must have been difficult to turn down such innocent requests.

A gentle breeze past by you and it sent shivers down your spine. You were remembered of where you were and why you were waiting for him. You waited in horrid anticipation to tell him these words in person. I am to be married off.
