Description
There are few things in life that a young prince is prepared for. Countless, colossal events to attend, when you’re hardly a few feet tall. Endless hours of studies and tutors when there are brilliant days full of promise and play. Rarely ever, are youthful, happy children ready for the stressful, time-consuming events that take control of their everyday lives.

For Odin’s youngest son, he was about to experience the third of the day.

Loki receded further into himself the closer they got to the throne room. His expression was an odd combination of fear and longing; fear, because he was about to meet someone who would drastically change his life forever (so he was told), and longing, because he was supposed to be pulling pranks with Thor on the various members of the council.

Such a tragic, tragic loss of opportunity it was. His father didn’t seem to notice too terribly, leading the youngest down the stretching corridors by a gentle hand, and his mother was painfully aware, but decided to play the comforter with her own graceful fingers entwined with the boys’.

“There’s nothing you should worry about, my dear.” Frigga told her youngest with a soothing smile, giving his little hand a squeeze. “I’m certain the Lady (Name) is a wonderful girl. You’ll be very happy with her, don’t you think?”

“I don’t know.” He said honestly, looking up at his mother worriedly. “I haven’t even met the girl and you’re gonna make me marry her? I don’t even know what she looks like! What if she’s got a bilgesnipe’s nose?”

“I can promise you she has nothing of the sort.” Odin chuckled, glancing down at his son. “I have met the young lady already, and she’s very pretty.”

“I guess that’s nice.” Loki huffed, turning the corner with both parents dragging him along. “But what about everything else? It’s no fun if she’s pretty and dumb. Is she a smart girl?”

“One of the brightest, according to her tutors.”

“Alright, but is she the kind of girl who hates dirty things? Or playing jokes? Or having fun??” He asked question after question, and both parents smiled.

“I think those are the types of questions you should save for her, my sweet.” Frigga suggested, “We will be meeting her very soon. Besides, you’ll have all the time in the world to get to know her. Why not use it to befriend her?”

“Because I’m too young to get married.” He moaned. Odin exchanged a glance with Frigga, knowing that conversation had been handled more than once. “I’m only eight!”

“As is she, and you’re not getting married now. It’s an arranged marriage for when you’re grown up, and you can become husband and wife.”

“So why do I have to meet her now if we aren’t gonna be married ‘til I’m a grown up?”

“It gives you a chance to become friends. I hear from Thor you have those in short supply, yes?” Odin said in a soft voice, a small bout of concern in his tone for his lonely boy. Loki huffed and rolled his eyes, trying to ignore the throne room that was coming so much closer.

“I don’t need any friends. I’ve got you, and Mother, and sometimes Thor, when he’s not playing with those big bullies.”

“Now Loki,” Frigga started warningly, “Thor’s friends are not bullies. You simply have conflicting interests, which can be easily solved if you didn’t...well, if you considered not pranking them from time to time, I’m sure it would go much better.”

“Maybe if they’d stop making fun of me.” He mumbled under his breath, which stopped coming when they paused in front of the grand doors. “Mother, please don’t make me do this. I-I-I’m not ready.” He pleaded, looking up at her with the hopeless doe eyes.

“You’ll do fine, dearest.” She promised with one last squeeze to his hand, “You’ll get along perfectly.”

“Have no fear.” Odin said with finality as the doors were slowly opened before you. Loki’s entire body tensed, gripping his parents tightly as he watched his entire world unfurl before him.

The golden sunlight filtered into the humongous chamber, practically dwarfing the king, his wife and the even smaller son. He felt like nothing short of a pygmy cockroach, feeling especially intimidated by the situation and the location combined.

‘I almost wish I could scurry away like one, too.’ He thought with a hopeless moan, his feet lumbering behind him as they stepped towards the only three nobles left in the room. Soldiers shut the doors behind them, leaving both families alone with each other. ‘If I could just remember that transmogrification spell Mother taught me-’

“Your Majesty!” The father of the family spoke, bowing deeply as his liege approached. “It is truly an honor to be presented with this opportunity. How fare thee, and the Lady Frigga?”

“We are well, milord. Thank you for your consideration.” Odin responded in kind, and Loki noticed the kind eyes of the father, and gentle smile of the mother. He had yet to notice, however, the tiny hands grasping onto the back of her skirt. “I must express my deepest gratitude in your acceptance of our proposal.”

“I would have accepted a million times over if you merely mentioned the idea.” The father chuckled, “We were absolutely elated when we heard the news, and even more when you wished to bring them together. Lady (Name) has been rather excited about it all, you know.”

“No, I haven’t!”

All started at the timid cry from behind her mother’s dress, earning a round of nervous chuckles from the parents and a rather amused smile from Odin. Frigga seemed less entertained, glancing at the suddenly offended-looking Loki.

“I will admit, she hasn’t been quite as happy as the rest of us. I’m sure she will come around once she meets the young master, however.” Her mother assured them, turning with a careful countenance and touching the hand of a little girl. “Don’t you want to meet him?”

“Not really.” She replied bluntly, holding her mother tighter.

“But he’s a prince, isn’t he?” Her mother continued, and the little fingers loosened slightly. “Didn’t you always dream of meeting a prince?”

“W-well, yes, but…” She trailed off, and Loki caught a flash of (h/c) locks, carefully arranged as she motioned for her guardian to listen. Her whisper was far from quiet when she added, “What if he’s mean, like Sif or Fanny?”

“I can assure you,” Loki suddenly piped up, “I’m not like either of them.”

It earned strange looks from every parent in the room, and one of disbelief when a pair of suspicious, (e/c) eyes peeked out from behind the fabric.

“Really?”

“Trust me. I don’t want anything to do with those bumbling brutes anymore than you do.” He scoffed, and she slowly shifted her head out to look at him completely. “I’d rather spend my time pranking them than having an intelligent conversation.”

“Loki,” Frigga began with yet another dangerous tone, trying to prod him into politeness. “You know better to speak about them like that.”

“I don’t think he’s wrong, Queen Frigga.” (Name) spoke out again, slowly stepping forward to reveal a puffy, (f/c) dress that looked far too formal for a little girl to wear, “In fact, I wasn’t even aware they were capable of ‘intelligent’ conversation.”

“(Name)!”

“I thought they only knew how to swing wooden swords around.”

“Well, this isn’t exactly how I planned the bonding to go over.” Odin said with a soft smile, which the parents nervously mirrored. “Loki, why don’t you take Lady (Name) to the gardens for a little while? Perhaps you could get to know each other better on your own.”

“I...guess we could.” Loki responded carefully, his brow furrowing with thought. Then his eyes popped wide open as if struck with a fantastic idea. “I know! Why don’t we go to the balconies? I know Thor and the others are usually training this time of day. Perhaps you and I could go...observe them?”

“You said that in a funny way.” She giggled, grasping his outstretched hand. Her eyes sparkled when he grinned, immediately tugging her down the grand hall.

“That’s because we’re going to do something funny. ...To them.” Loki added mischievously. It was all the parents could do to watch them laughing madly down the way, running for the doors and slipping through without looking back.

“Be careful, dearest!!” Both Frigga and (Name)’s mother called, and the fathers exchanged a knowing glance.

“I suppose all our worry was for nothing; they’ve hit it off perfectly fine.” The father said with a hearty laugh, and Odin clapped him on the shoulder.

“I believe you’re right. Perhaps they’ll be alright with one another, after all.”

“It’s so funny; she’s always keeping to herself, that (Name). Reading something, drawing pictures, cooped up in her chambers as the day goes by. It’s a wonder she socialized with him at all.” Her mother sighed, resting her cheek in the palm of her hand, dainty fingers curling around a lock of hair.

Frigga couldn’t help but smile at her, too, regarding all the parents in the room.

“It seems to me they were simply meant to be, my lady.”

Odin’s eyes shone.

“Indeed they were.”
