Thank you so much - I can't wait for the floral season to arrive again! We have plans for our garden this year and I'm hoping to do a lot more macro photography out there when the new plants start to develop.

Thank you my dear! (I always moan that I can't go higher than F8 on this camera! But I used extra glass, so it could have done with a bit more on the F front really I think.)

photofairy In reply to AnnaKirsten [2011-01-11 17:04:47 +0000 UTC]

really?? f8?? how do you manage, it would drive me mad! I love my f22 and f45, well, lets just say it makes me feel very special

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

AnnaKirsten In reply to photofairy [2011-01-11 18:54:13 +0000 UTC]

It was taken with my Canon Powershot G11 with 12 dioptres magnification on the front (Raynox + 4 dptr closeup lens). F8 on this camera is supposed to be equivalent of about F11 or even more in some conditions, but when doing droplet photography, as you know, we need a really good DOF and of course the more glass that's used, the "flatter" it becomes. All considered this photo did come out well, and I don't have photo-stacking facilities so it has to do! If I had used the EOS and Sigma 105mm lens, I would have needed around F22 or higher to get a decent result.

The reason I prefer using this camera for macro/closeup work is the way the flash doesn't flood what I'm capturing and burn it out, or leave me with horrible dark backgrounds. If I use the EOS and Sigma 105mm macro lens + flash, the photos turn out horribly harsh and contrasty, and I hate dark backgrounds too! I can only really use that gear on a tripod indoors where there is no movement, but with studio lighting (or natural sunlight in the room) and no need for flash. We do have an external flash, but it's all far too heavy for me to manage unfortunately, and as it is now, I have to get Richard to set it all up for me so all I need to do is sit down and do the creative bit.

I had a session out in the garden earlier this year, but needed a low stool to sit on, and to be able to support my camera to keep it still too. It really wore me out, and I only really ended up with a couple of fairly decent shots, both of which I'd like to have taken again to get a better composition, but didn't have the energy to go and do that. Then the ice melted and the opportunity was gone. Life is far more simple at the moment working with Ultra Fractal!!!

sorry hon, I totally missed this comment!
I always forget that you prefer not to use dslr for your macros, reading this I remembered you said something like this before.
but something got me thinking.
Sigma is the only lend I had exactly teh same problem with that you are describing. Contrasty, harsh pictures. Sigma is actually very hit and miss, occasionally you get a great one, but most of the time optics are less than good (hence the price).
I would definitely recommend you sell it and buy a cheap 50 mm 1.8 and a set of Kenko extension tubes. I am sure it will completely rejuvenate your future images.
Having said that I know how you feel, I've been too tired for photography, actually it can be really strenuous with heavy equipment, so yes, I know how you feel

AnnaKirsten In reply to photofairy [2011-01-18 16:39:07 +0000 UTC]

LOL I actually had a Canon 50mm 1.8 lens and we have a full set of Canon fully auto extension tubes too; then I sent the 50mm back and exchanged it for the 60mm macro, was never happy with it, have since sold that...

Well I might once again get the 50mm one again since I have the gear, and it certainly gave me far better results, and it might tide me over until I hopefully one day get the Canon 100mm IS macro lens. Thing is, I hardly have enough strength at the moment to even use my little G11! I'm honestly that weak on this medication, and have refused to take the final step up to 10mg because of it. It has really pissed me off!

I know, dslr is just too heavy! most of the time i use the tripod but even then it is very strenuous setting everything up and crouching down for hours on end. 50 mm 1.8 however is an awesome and cheap lens, i find that i shoot everything with i most of the time. itt really is that good, i think you should get it anyway (and itself is really light)

They certainly keep their price!!! Hmmm.. I'll be thinking about it for a little while longer I think, as Christmas was expensive this year what with both Kaz and Richard having their birthdays just before it too.

gosh, i know what you mean. and also we are facing a tax bill at the end of January (our previous accountant mismanaged us resultng in big tax bill so this will be the last one of those, from next year we will be a lot better off)

AnnaKirsten In reply to photofairy [2011-01-19 21:19:17 +0000 UTC]

I actually did look back at some of my shots taken with the 50mm + Raynox/extension tubes when I had it, and realised that although it gave good size, I did have to get very close to the subjects resulting in shadowing, and from that point of view both the Sigma and my G11 plus glass work better really. Richard wanted to know what I wanted for my birthday, and I suggested an 18-55mm IS lens so I could add the stuff to it for macro work and see how that was. He went and got me one today (ex kit so it was no dearer than the 50mm), but unfortunately again, it's necessary to get far too close for my liking - even worse than the 50mm prime lens! He will take it back tomorrow, as they were happy that I should just try it out as I'm disabled. I think I'll just stick with what I have for the time being to be honest, and I really do like the results I am able to get from time to time.

you are right, with ext. tubes you have to get really close, like 5cm, which is ok for indoor droplet set up, sitting on a chair and using a tripod, but outdoors it would be very difficult to take insect shots, too close!
stick to what works for you my dear

AnnaKirsten In reply to photofairy [2011-01-20 14:02:37 +0000 UTC]

Well at least I do have the choice, so that if I'm feeling fit enough (when?) I can use the EOS and the Sigma 105mm macro lens. Actually it is a cracking lens as it happens, but the harshness is always from the flash, because I can't use something specialised due to the weight of it all.

I am keeping my for you to get better by the summer, it will be 6 months of reasonably effective treatment so hopefully, that will mean that things can get stable and improve more.
flash-wise, it's a toughy, but I saw an excellent tutorial about flash extension made from a milk carton (I'll just try to find the link now) that should be really light and precisely deal with the harsh light from the ordinary frontal flash

here it is [link]
