Did Thestrals originate in mythology, or did J.K. Rowling create them?

Thestrals as such are unique to JK Rowling, but similar creatures do appear in Mythology.

For example the Thestrals have some similarities to a mare in Celtic Myths/Legends, this horse is skeleton-like, has great traveling abilities and is associated with death, destiny and magic. In Celtic Myths there's also a creature called "Kestrel" (sounds familiar? )but this is a dark bird of prey, with white spots under it's eyes. It's possible she got inspired by these and combined the two.

Thestrals are also similar to "Nightmares" who are demonic reptilian-like horses capable of flight, they feed on evil emotions and are symbols of death, destruction, and misfortune.

And then of course we have the four horsemen of the apocalypse, where Famine rides a black horse.

Ah, very interesting . I've heard of "Nightmares", and of course the Four Horsemen, but the other info is new to me. Thanks for sharing it.

BTW, I have a journal about the Four Horsemen if you want to read it .

Well, I've done a lot of reading about the subject since these kind of horses have always been very dear to me .

I did read it. Sadly, I know nothing about stop-motion. Thanks for your comment!

You usually know a lot about a subject if it's dear to you

That's okay . A lot of people born from the early 90's on (myself excluded) don't know much, if anything, about stop-motion animation, mostly because its successor was CGI. So, you haven't been living under a rock or anything . Here's a link: [link]

You might want to also look up Ray Harryhausen

Oh, and you're welcome (for the comment).
