Thanks! I draw / paint it. The paint and ink sinks into the canvas and stays all on its own, but I also use a fixative just to be sure.

Is this traditional work or do you get a manufacturer to put the print on it for you?

It's the original, traditional work.

The whole lot of them are, though I'm looking at prints for the future. Maybe.

What type of paints do you use?

AnnEnchanted In reply to justwaitforit [2013-11-12 04:39:11 +0000 UTC]

Heavy body acrylic paint. But I'm a mixed media fan so watercolor, graphite, pens and markers, also tend to find themselves in there as well.

And wouldn't it have been easier to just paint/draw directly on the book cover rather than on a separate canvas that you had to attach to the cover?

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

Nevuela [2013-11-09 05:05:46 +0000 UTC]

Wow! How much did that cost the buyer? And TEN hours? Why did it take so long? It shouldn't take more than two hours for such a simple design.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

AnnEnchanted In reply to Nevuela [2013-11-09 10:33:06 +0000 UTC]

First, I mentioned the time on this piece because it did demand more time than my other works. Second, I don't charge for time, so it cost the same as any other design with that size and paper count.

To answer the comments in your other post - no, it would not be easier. Beside the fact that it would be dangerous to apply paint right next to an area where I have all of my paper (and it would only take a drop to ruin the edges), to apply a wet medium to bookboard poses the danger of warping the bookboard. The entire journal is stronger if the canvas, and art on that canvas, is allowed to fully dry before it's bound to the book.

Nevuela In reply to AnnEnchanted [2013-11-09 19:14:16 +0000 UTC]

I still don't see how it's easier to paint on a separate canvas. I have painted on book covers myself and the bookboard did not warp at all. What kind are you using? There are some blank journals and sketchbooks out there with canvas hardcovers. That is what I used, and it came out perfect. No warping at all. And how hard is it to avoid getting paint on the paper inside the book? Are you using watercolor? I know that type of paint is hard to control. And how did you glue the canvas to the book without it warping? The only time I have trouble with warping is when glue or decoupage is involved.

AnnEnchanted In reply to Nevuela [2013-11-09 21:23:14 +0000 UTC]

My goodness, but you are persistent. I said it poses the danger of warping the bookboard or spilling paint, but let me say that more plainly. I have never had such a problem, and I take these extra steps merely as a precautionary measure.

Besides that, when making an actual painting on a book, as in a full fledged work of art like this one, painting it on canvas prior to binding is better for me. To stretch out the canvas before me and paint it as one solid, flat piece. If I were to paint the canvas once it were on the book I would be working around the shape of that book, and the painting wouldn't have the same fluidity. But, I don't expect you to acquiesce to that, as you seem over fond of poking at everything I say.

You know, I was just about to reply with "Ohhh, okay, I understand now, sorry for not getting it sooner," but then I got to the part at the end where you decided to hurt my feelings, and I take it all back.

I was merely trying to UNDERSTAND why you chose to do it the way you did. That is why I asked so many questions. How do you expect people to understand your process if you're not volunteering such info up front? Maybe post some FAQs or something. All I did was try to make some helpful suggestions. I am not "fond of poking" at anyone or anything. It's called curiosity. I asked you some questions, you answered them. Just because I overrode some of your answers with more questions does not mean I am in any way criticizing you. It's called making suggestions. Trying to be helpful. Trying to understand. Sorry if you took it the wrong way.

AnnEnchanted In reply to Nevuela [2013-11-09 23:29:52 +0000 UTC]

I actually like getting asked questions, and for people to want to figure out what I'm up to and how it's done. There was nothing about what I said that was a decision to hurt your feelings. If you'll notice someone else even commented saying it seemed like you were being rude. That's how I understood it as well. The danger of the internet is we don't get to hear the tone people say things in, and so it's very easy to misunderstand someone's intentions. Which, apparently, we have both done. What you thought was me being mean was merely me being exhausted with the idea that someone was picking an argument on the page of my first DD.

At any rate, now that we understand eachother a little better, you are right. I should expand my 'our material' link with something a little more FAQ. The bother with that is that people have such particular questions, it's hard to know what to answer. You, however, have proven yourself especially suited to ask thorough questions. So, by all means message me with a list of them, if you've got more. If you'd like to just call a draw then that's fine too, but for my part I'm sorry for this whole misunderstanding.

"The danger of the internet is we don't get to hear the tone people say things in, and so it's very easy to misunderstand someone's intentions." OMG it's so good to know I'm not the only person who realizes this! I mean, I know I'm not the only one by far, but it sure feels like that on Facebook a lot. I have so many more communication problems online than in person, even though ironically I am much more eloquent in writing than in spoken words. It's no wonder I piss so many people off when half the time I am honestly not trying to pick a fight.

Thanks for understanding and I am sorry too for not being more tactful in my wording.

artisticvengeance In reply to Nevuela [2013-11-09 07:56:50 +0000 UTC]

Dont be rude. Painting takes a long time, and alot of commitment as does all art. I dare you to try doing this exact same thing in the same time, mixing these perfect colours and getting the details right, as you wait for layers on a certain area to dry. Painting in real life takes longer because you have to wait for paint to dry.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Nevuela In reply to artisticvengeance [2013-11-09 19:07:32 +0000 UTC]

Um, excuse me, but how is asking a simple question rude? I am simply trying to UNDERSTAND things here. Asking questions is a GOOD thing. It is better than making assumptions.

Please, I could paint this in less than two hours. Go look through my original artwork folder. Almost everything in it was painted in less than 10 hours. Most were painted in 5 or less. I've been painting for nearly 20 years. Maybe this artist here hasn't been painting very long. It usually takes longer for those who haven't been doing it very long. I know that from experience. No need to get so offended over it.

P.S.: I don't see how this is any of your business. You seem to think the original artist can't stand up for herself, which, by the way, she already has, in case you haven't noticed her reply to me. Don't defend people unless they ask you to. Assuming people need your help, THAT is considered rude.

artisticvengeance In reply to Nevuela [2013-11-09 22:30:44 +0000 UTC]

I am simply trying to correct on what I thought was uncalled for, as I had noticed your comment before they had. In the statement "don't defend people unless they ask you to", this is the statement of a small minded being. There is a rule of freedom of speech, and honestly, if you saw someone being harassed on the street would you just let the person be taunted? I am not thinking the artist unable to fend for themselves, I am simply advising you to not do something that is very frowned upon by most artists. In fact I admire the artist, with as many views as her work gets I am very sure that they must have to deal with many people like you, who are ignorant and do not seem to understand that some people may have some things that they do differently in their artwork, and as you said, they may have not been painting for very long. In your original comment you criticized their time in how long it took to paint on the medium and saying that you could do better, which is something I dealt with in middle school and elementary, with students saying, "they were better," and that you should have done something differently. People will take longer on projects and that is not something to be criticized. I as well understand you were trying to offer some constructive criticism, but you could have stated in differently. Thank you.

Nevuela In reply to artisticvengeance [2013-11-09 22:43:37 +0000 UTC]

There is a HUGE difference between my asking questions and someone being harassed or bullied on the street. And you would be surprised how many people would tear your head off for trying to defend them.

I still don't understand what it is you think I said that was so "rude" and "uncalled for." I literally have NO idea what you are talking about. All I did was ask a simple, harmless question. And forgive me, but I have NEVER heard of anyone taking ten hours to paint such a small, fairly simple (i.e. not overly detailed) picture, not even a new artist. I have known many artists over the years through my work in various galleries, craft fairs and arts organizations. Artists on many different levels, from abstract to realism, amateur to professional. We swap stories all the time. Needless to say, the OP's comment surprised me.

All right, let me just interject here. I posted the hours on this one because it was VERY strange that it took that long. Ordinarily the painting on the books doesn't take anywhere near that time, but this one had alot of layering and gave me trouble. You also might notice I say the sketching AND painting took ten hours, as in, I made a full detailed sketch of the work in my sketchbook prior to painting.

As for how long I've been doing art, well pretty much my whole life, but with classes and real study about ten years. I don't put that up anywhere because I don't think it's pertinent, people learn differently, the time doing it is arbitrary.

Please stop this bickering on my page, at the root of it one of you is asking questions and the other is trying to be kind. It's ridiculous to argue over whether or not someone has to right to be kind.

It would make me wonderfully happy if neither of you responded to this, but simple went on your merry ways. If either of you has something further to say please send it to my message box and let's keep this conversation off public forum. Thank you.

Thanks for the clarification on the timing. I often get asked how long my work takes, and it's often hard to give a straight, clear-cut answer without explaining this or that. Info of this nature is also potential FAQ material.

~ I say this here and not as a PM because it's not part of the previous conversation at all and actually answers your earlier question of whether I had any more suggestions for FAQs.

((Might cuss a bit in this, dearly apologize)) Alright, this is starting to get rather annoying. Before you even say, "Oh you're gonna defend ArtisticVengeance?" she is actually a friend I know in real life.

We all know there are people who don't like to be defended, but come on, just f-ing attempt a least.

And I see how you don't understand why your statement you made on this deviation is rude or uncalled for. Maybe I can attempt to explain why.

You said " And TEN hours? Why did it take so long? It shouldn't take more than two hours for such a simple design."  It depends on how the artistic painting it wants it done.  They may have not wanted to mess up, and were slow on it, they may have even wanted it perfect. I'm not a painter myself and don't plan on being one, but I know that every person, paints at their one pace. Rather it's fast or slow, it's doesn't matter.
