Description Whenever I get stuck on a painting that I'm working on, I've found anymore that doing a portrait seems to relax me and make me feel more productive.

I'm not big on doing fan art, but it is kind of fun. Only problem is most of the people I want to do fan art portraits of are not current actors. I found the reference photo for this in a google search.

This is called "Shakin the Tree Boss" because this is from the movie "Cool Hand Luke"...my ABSOLUTE, ALL TIME FAVORITE Paul Newman movie! I just love that movie and I love Paul Newman .

So this is my first piece of fan art

Hope you enjoy. I sure liked painting it (handsome subject matter!!!)

Great work! Since childhood Cool Hand Luke has been my favorite movie of all. The message of the movie seems to be (in my view) that a person is worthy of respect based on effort more than results. What an admirable spirit the main character had! Very well done!

Thank you so much!

I have always loved that movie. It's so terribly sad actually. I remember the scene where he gets to visit with his mother. I think that's one of the scenes that I found most sad.

There are so many different ways that a person could interpret it. I remember there was a scene at the end of the movie, after he was shot, where he was lying on the floor of the church (wasn't it?) in the same pose as the crucifixion. That always struck me as very poignant.

Someone suggested that I google about the comparisons between Newman's character of Luke and Christ. There are many comparisons that can be drawn. I suppose that Dragline (George Kennedy's character) would fill the "Judas" role. As you pointed out, COOL HAND LUKE is open to much varied interpretation. He said "Still shakin' it, Boss!" and Dragline referred to him as a "natural born world-shaker". Always loved that movie! You really captured him in you work!

My favorite scene with George Kennedy would have to be the one where the girl was washing the car and he kept calling her "Lucille, My Lucille" He was priceless in that movie!!!

Thank you so much for the wonderful compliment on the painting. It's nice to find someone as crazy about that movie as I am. I talk about it at work and so many people have never even heard of it???? What's THAT all about???

I've met several men in my travels who like that movie very much! Comedic rural/country singer/songwriter, Tim Wilson made the statement, (something to the effect of)"Any man who doesn't know what bein' a man means needs to watch two movies: BIG JAKE and COOL HAND LUKE." It's refreshing to know a woman who truly appreciates this fine film! That was a great scene--he took the glasses off ("Damn things 'r blockin' the view!"). A lot of ladies liked Paul Newman's looks, and maybe some of his films like THE LONG HOT SUMMER, but few, in my experience, have even seen let alone "get" COOL HAND LUKE. I've seen the movie so many times that I can speak much of the dialogue, so I rarely watch more than clips of it now, UNLESS I'm watching it with a person viewing it for the first time. It's such a fine thing to introduce that wonderful movie to someone. My oldest son insisted that his wife watch that film. Kennedy received the "Best Supporting Actor" Oscar for the role of "Dragline". There are so many great quotable lines in that film; "What we got here is a failure to communicate.", "Still shakin' it, boss!", "Callin' it your job don't make it right, boss.", "WHERE ARE YOU NOW?!" [when Luke was sitting exhausted and "broken" on the floor of the barraks]. I lament the fact that Paul Newman eventually was "given" a lifetime achievement Oscar and won for his reprised role of "Fast Eddy" in THE COLOR OF MONEY, but didn't win for his greatest role (as Lucas Jackson). I drew(real word?) a picture of COOL HAND LUKE years ago [the photo where he's sitting/leaning on the ground with that bottle opener on a chain around his neck. I don't think I posted it--I need to do a fresh drawing. I have to say, again, you did very well with that drawing, and you are a rare lady to appreciate that fine film!

You know...I like chic flicks too, but I like a lot of movies that would typically be considered "guy" movies. Love Apocalypse Now, Full Metal Jacket, Two Mules for Sister Sara (actually, I love Clint Eastwood).
Paul Newman did so MANY good movies and I do like Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Rally Round the Flag Boys, Long Hot Summer. But Luke is my FAV!!!!!
And I think one of my favorite quotes, though I love all the Shakin the Tree Boss quotes, is "sometimes nothin' can be a real cool hand" And when he tells them all "quit feedin' off me". And you should hear my rendition of "Get yourself a sweet Madonna
dressed in rhinestone, sitting on a
pedestal of abalone shells" . Quite comical actually
I was so depressed when he died. He was just phenomenal!!!! I'm going to be bummed when Anthony Hopkins dies as well. I guess my taste in actors is a little different than popular choices
You should DEFINITELY put your drawing on here! I'd love to see it! That was always a classic scene when he was sitting on the curb with the bottle opener around his neck with the shit-eatin grin on his face . I'd love, love, love to see it

As a U.S. Marine,I've always treasured FULL METAL JACKET. Eastwood is awesome and THE OUTLAW JOSEY WALES is my second favorite movie. Sir Anthony Hopkins is a real talent! "Quit feedin' off me!" is another great quote. I too learned how to play that "sweet Madonna" song (it's actually two or three easy chords on the guitar). The drawing (and reference photo) I was talking about is from an apparent break in the work day while wearing the state issue clothes. I'll probably re-do that and post it soon.

That it is! Sad to think that it was all wasted over parking meters and beer...but the punishment was so extreme!
It has some very symbolic things in it too. I've always loved it! There are so many wonderful actors in it when they were just starting out. Dennis Hopper, Joe Don Baker, Wayne Rogers, Harry Dean Stanton, Ralph Waite! Just one of the best movies EVER! (can you tell I'm a HUGE fan )

May I hint of one of my fav actors of all time..Richard Burton...I should really make some more golden era portraits too. There is just so little time, and so much to do...

Annezon In reply to Veiz [2011-05-31 17:44:57 +0000 UTC]

Hmmmmmmmm...Richard Burton would make a great portrait Very photogenic. I've got a very unorthodox list of people to draw...may include him in there as well
I've got Anthony Hopkins, Robert de Niro (Taxi Driver era), Martin Sheen/Robert Duvall from Apocalypse Now, Lena Horne, Agnes Moorehead (), Jean Simmons...would love to do Grace Kelly.
I know...I could paint forever and never get everything done that I'd like to!
