Description At first, I was going to call this painting The Priestess. I knew that women held positions of great regard in early societies, but I assumed that the earliest shamans were men. It just so happens, that upon researching a little more, the earliest known paleolithic shaman was a woman (circa 30,000 BP). Women of Paleolithic societies enjoyed a higher status and shared in much of the decision making. It also appears that these groups were based on a matrilineal descent pattern.

Most people are familiar with the cave paintings at Lascaux, located in southwestern France (the basis for my background). This vast cave system contains some of the best examples of Upper Paleolithic art. I can still recall seeing pictures of these paintings as a child and being completely fascinated by them.

The Shamans tattoos, with the exception of those on her face, are based on tattoos found on Otzi, the iceman. Otzi is an exceptionally well preserved mummy found in the Otztal Alps by two German tourists in September of 1991. His remains date to some 5,300 years ago. Admittedly this does not fall in to the age range of my shaman...but it makes for a good painting Tattoos have been in existence for a very long time and have been used to symbolize everything from ancestral descent to Otzi's pain relief treatments.

The stock I used for The Shaman is from Chonastock: [link] Thank you so much for the use of your beautiful stock!!!!

I love them too!!!!!! I spend many hours reading and researching the ancients and have many theories that don't always agree with accepted history LOL I believe a person should actually think once in a while lol instead of just accepting what is taught, do you know what I mean? I really do enjoy the search for truth in the story of our human past.

Yeah..I'm not horribly mainstream myself. And I'm in complete agreement. I think we were given brains for a reason. I'd rather formulate my own ideas and opinions than just follow what I'm "supposed" to be believe.

What types of books do you like to read? Any historical fiction novels? Those are my favs and there are some really well researched novels out there. As you can tell, I am absolutely obsessed with Ancient Egypt (one of those past experiences I think )

I do read a lot of historical fiction as well as many of archeology etc. I have a wide taste in books LOL I have recently read the Tarzan novels of Burroughs for fun. The character in the book is sooooo different than any of the films I also enjoy Clive Cussler and his work with NUMA in underwater archeology. I have so many books around here, many on Egypt, ancient Persia, any of the ancients peoples. I really like the study of where we came from and what all has been forgotten. I had a friend stop by here a couple of years ago and she couldn't believe that Ihad read so many books, which made me laugh. I told her that I had read many of them twice and had discarded many when I moved into my current house. Since she wasn't a reader that just blew her away LOL What are some books that you enjoy?

Oh my gosh, there are so many Lately I have been reading a lot of Clive Cussler and David Gibbins, he is great. I think you would enjoy some of Gibbins works as they deal with ancients, the Tiger Warrior is really great. Also, he has a book about Atlantis that has an interesting thought to it, similar to what I also think about early peoples during the melting of the last ice age and the flooding of the Mediterranean and Black seas. There is an archeology site at Tel Hamoukar (not sure about the spelling) that shows that early man was there about 12,000 years ago.

The palaeolithic isn't really my period, but I'm intrigued that they have identified a shaman from that era. What did they use as evidence? (I can only imagine it was hand size in the paintings or perhaps grave goods?) I also wonder how they found out about descent patterns, is it just analogy with modern stone age societies? It's something I've been looking at in the bronze age for quite a while!

Hope you don't mind me asking all these questions, and I really like your image, the face is excellent

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Annezon In reply to thefuguestate [2011-02-28 17:40:02 +0000 UTC]

The reference for that comes from a book entitled "The Woman in the Shaman's Body: Reclaiming the Feminine in Religion and Medicine" by Barbara Tedlock. It was cited in a wikipedia article I read. I would love to buy the book now
Apparently, after an excavation of a Paleolithic site in the Czech Republic, they found what, based on the condition of the body and the funerary goods associated with it, was the body of a Paleolithic shaman. They of course assumed that it was a male, but after skeletal analysis, they determined that it was actually a female.
As far as descent patterns, I should have phrased it differently. From my research, it is assumed that like most hunter-gatherer societies of the Paleolithic and Mesolithic period, descent was traced in a matrilineal fashion. That seems to have been more common practice throughout early history. The article suggested that the Neolithic period saw a rise in patrilineal descent patterns.
It's quite a good article with lots of citations (more good books to read ). [link]
I've gotten so busy painting that I haven't read anything in a while. But her book sounds great!!!!
The Paleolithic era is not my forte...that's for sure. I love all ancient history...so please let me know what else you find

Cool, thanks for taking the time to clear that up for me. I always find it funny when people assume gender roles in the distant past. Whatever we think is the norm, we can find exceptions among communities alive here and now, so why assume 10,000-60,000 years ago things were the same?

Just one example. There was an Iron Age burial of two middle aged men that one of my friends was working on. They were buried arm in arm. In the right-wing press reported it as 'two warrior comrades'...there weren't even any weapons with them. I think they were just embarrassed to admit that our ancient ancestors might have been ok with people being gay.

Hey...are you an archaeologist??? I was looking at some of the pottery shards on your page. I have to head to work right now, but want to explore them more this evening.
Yeah...I find it distressing and annoying when individuals project modern societal beliefs on ancient societies. For one thing...it's not terribly scientific. For another...it's just...well...irritating lol
I'll message more when I get a chance. We'll have to discuss

I started to use hands for the background, but as I said, I remember being drawn to the Lascaux paintings as a kid. One of the things that made me choose my field of study

Aww no... Altamira, El Castillo, El Pendo... there are lots of paleolithic caves where I live,Cantabria (in the north of Spain)(it continues the atlantic line of Lascaux) but the most famous are Altamira, with animals mostly, though also some hands and even some scripted symbols... I think I've never herd of Cueva de las Manos... can you tell me something else about it?

Thanks for your kind answer

I don't know that much about the Cueva de las Manos...but I'll research it. I know it's the one with all the hands. I mostly familiar with Lascaux.
Wow...Spain! How cool! Some of my ancestors were from Spain (well...Basques...Sevier (changed from Javier which they believe was Xavier and then the Jassos and Azpilcuetas). I want to come to Spain so badly! I'm also in to genealogy
Let me do some research on the Cueva de los Manos and then I want to read more about Altamira, El Castillo and El Pendo.
Cantabria...is that by any chance near the Basque area? I know that they inhabit the northern part of Spain on the French border.

The Basque Country is our neighbour! And I have some friends there! Well, they usually don't feel very Spanish, because there they have their very own language and a strong nacionalist movement! But they are very strong and nice people I believe. I don't know about the name Javier in Basque, they change things a lot, for example, my name is MarΓa, but they say Miren in Euskara (their language) They have some very famous companys like Kukutsumutxu, wich means the kiss of the flea and has some very beautiful clothes and accesories desings for example.
And yes you have to come!!! I send you a link to a youtoube video with traditional basque music and pictures of the region of Vizcaya [link]

And because I have to promote my own land as well I send you the ones of mine (we are very like each other as we are the continuation of Euskadi to the west )[link]

Thanks for you kind answer!

I am totally speechless! I watched the video about Cantabria and it is stunningly breathtakingly beautiful! How nice it must be to wake up in your world every morning I've never seen anything so pretty. Took my breath away! I HAVE to get there sometime!!!
The Basque music is really cool. It reminds me a lot of zydeco music...but then again that would make sense...with so many Cajuns and French in Louisiana.
Okay...so do you know where Sanguesa is? The Castillo de Javier? That is supposed to be where my descendants came from. I know that Javier/Xavier/Esabierre is a fairly common name from what I understand? But from the research that's been done by everyone, they came from that area (Navarra).

I personally have never been there (I've travelled so few? (not much))but I've heard it's a wonderful place and well, folk music has a lot of things in common, as a lot of towns have a lot of things in common too, even when they have their differences
