Description PROLOGUE
Our History and Our Fears

It is shown in our records that this world initially only had two races, and two civilizations.  One was us, under our moon of darkness; the other was our brethren, who lived under the shining moon of life.  The gods placed us here on this world, we grew and expanded; we gained knowledge, we used it; we traveled about our world and saw the wonders around us, never once harming the delicate balance placed here and maintained by the moons.

However a scant few hundreds of years ago, the others arrived.  In strange ships that flew where there was no air, that had no rudders nor sails nor did not use moonstones, they arrived to our world with peaceful intent.  They had claimed that their world, a world where it was mostly water as ours is mostly sky, had been laid to waste.  The sun had grown too hot, too large...thus causing them to flee their home world lest they die in its searing heat.  We welcomed them kindly, introduced them to our world and its wonders.  They shared with us their technology, and we shared with them our magic.  They soon learned how to travel the world like we, to revel in its beauty and to learn and adapt.

For each remaining moon, the others made their homes.  The ones under the Green centered their life on studying the heavens and the lush jungles around them.  The ones under the Red thrived in the desert heat and used its sand to create wondrous glass buildings.  The ones under the Blue braved the winds and formed a culture centered on art and music.  The ones under the Purple built their cities in the ice, braving the cold and perusing all forms of knowledge.  The ones under the Yellow accepted the fierce thunderstorms and captured the power of electricity in yellow moonstones for all to use.  As each civilization flourished, each became more advanced...almost to a competitive level.

We continued to live in our peaceful study of life and death, and of the ways of our dark moon.  We were not exactly shunned yet not entirely accepted by the newcomers to our world.  Our Silver brethren continued to accept our ways, not afraid of us or our unique abilities.  And we, the Dark ones, continued to coexist peacefully with the Silver, the only other race that understood us.  Secretly the two of us agreed to guardedly watch the other civilizations, to take care that they not grow too strong.  History had taught us what happened to those with two much pride and arrogance, and thus we thought it wise to make sure history would not repeat itself.  The Silver began to dispatch forces of guardian ships to watch the others, and to keep the Silver lands and its people safe.  We, however, had a different plan: to use our knowledge of existance, the very magic that is the basis for our moon, and make a living construct crafted in our own image.  In our efforts, we created a great being beyond our expectations.  Mortian, a large beast with the powers of our moon became our race's guardian.  Proud of our new accomplishment, we set him to rest to await our summons if we were ever in peril.  Mortian was a means of defending ourselves, and not ever intended to be a weapon of war.

However somehow the others found out of our creature...our Gigas.  One by one, they all began to create their own.  It was an act not out of flattery or respect, but out of competition; the others all wanted to surpass each other and us: each wanted to be the greatest civilization on Arcadia.  Out of spite and jealousy, they turned their Gigas on one another, wreaking havoc and starting horrible wars.  What made these wars horrible was not the jealousy behind them or the dread Gigas that fought, but that the technology that had grown beyond the people who wielded it.  What we had feared had come to pass, and when we saw this we knew that we did not want to get involved.  Withdrawing into our home, we drove off any attempts by the others to attack our lands beneath our moon with our power over storms and gravity, refusing to use Mortian.

Separate to our actions, the Silver lost patience with the remaining civilizations and became infuriated by the pointless wars.  Using their powers of life and death, they created their own Gigas named Zelos.  Immediately Zelos was ordered to use his great power, and he caused moonstones to hail down on each civilization in an appalling act of genocide.  Even the lands of the Silver were affected by these rains, and many of their own people and cities were lost.  They then sealed their largest city Soltis from the rest of the world, erecting a shield and making it quite clear that only a passive race such as we of the Dark moon would escape Zelos' wrath.  Shocked by these actions, we could do little but remain to ourselves and shake our heads at the Silver's foolishness.  The remnants of the other moons' peoples were chagrined by this, by the fact that we were the only ones who survived the Rains of Destruction unscathed, that we were the only ones who were not judged by the dread Silver Gigas.  Did we not build the first Gigas in our apparent arrogance?  Did we not set the first stone in the foundation of that cold war, that lead to the brutal Gigas Wars?  The Purple, who were not completely devastated by the rains, used one of their ships they had preserved from their travels to this world and sent it into space in hopes of destroying our moon.  However, the ship was old and lacking resources, and its impact did not destroy our moon, only altered its orbit.  Slowly, over the span of a few years, our Dark moon slid out of its rightful place in the sky and moved more over the Purple lands.  In a great sense of irony, it hid itself behind the Purple moon, its dark beauty hidden by the cold purple light.  Great maelstroms were caused in the sky-sea to our west, large rifts and belts unlike any we had ever seen formed and separated the lands, and the great water sea and lands below were covered in a high-pressure layer of clouds that sunlight could not reach...and no doubt life could neither.   Lastly the lunar shift caused a great ice age in the lands to the south, expanding the polar ice cap and burying the cities and lands of the Purple civilization; the Purple's vengeful  actions caused their own extinction.

We were terrified; our moon was removed from our sight and the aftereffects had altered our world.  Our scientists estimated that with its bizarre new orbit, it would pass close to Arcadia every few centuries; otherwise, it would remain hidden behind or next to the Purple moon.  The only visible signs that our moon was hovering near the Purple one was an increased amount of Purple eclipses.  It would not be Arcadia's shadow passing in front of the large moon...but instead our smaller dark one.

Our Silver brothers have ascended into the sky to drift near their moon, left us here with those remnants of humanity that loathe us.  Now devastated, we will abandon our cities and move to the great one where Mortian was created.  It shall sink into that great cloud sea, and we of the Dark will seal ourselves and our final home into a deep sleep.  We have brought this fate upon ourselves, in our cowardice, and there is little more we can do.  All we can do is continue to hide like bats, hide from the sun within this dark storm we have created, and hope that some day we may return.  If you have found us and your world is one of peace, then please wake us.  Each one of us has hope that one day this will happen, that we will return to an Arcadia that is beautiful. But please, do not wake our Gigas...that is something we could not bear.  We fear that if he is awakened, then history will repeat itself and this beautiful world will fall into another dark time.

Please, we beg you; do not let history repeat itself.

Hello I was browsing fanfiction.com for fanfiction for Skies of Arcadia and found your fanfiction on there. It interested me and I started reading it, because not only is it the first one I've ever seen about a black moon but it was also well written. I don't know if you intend to finish writing it, but if you do I can't wait to read the rest of it. Honestly I've always wondered about a black moon, after finding that discovery in the dark rift, and wondered why no one else ever did.

I intend on finishing it, yeah...but I just don't have the time that I used to. I wrote this story when I was 21/22, and I had a lot more free time back in those days. Now I either have to drop art to work on my writing, or cut back on writing to work on my art.

Thanks for your kind comments.
