Story
"I don't think I've ever been in a place that looked this barren before," Cam announced as he glanced around the desert landscape that stretched out far beyond the stable grounds, meeting the horizon with a ridge of large rocks.
"It's not that barren," Kehla scoffed, rolling her eyes at the young guy as she walked around to Bijou's other side to double check her tack, "It's a desert, what did you expect."
"Well I've never seen a desert before, Karen," Cam shot back, rolling his eyes as he munched on another pretzel from the bag he was holding in his hands. The massive bag of pretzels, mind you. The only thing more amazing to Cam than the landscape here were the massive American portions.
"Are you done eating those yet?" Kehla grumbled as she glanced over at him, "If you are then maybe you could finally give me a hand getting Bijou ready. We're already running late." Cam sighed, but he put the pretzel bag away in the car and walked over.
"You just need my expert cross country eye," he teased in a cocky voice. Kehla rolled her eyes back at him, so hard that Cam swore she probably saw in the inside of her head.
"Yeah, yeah, sure," she mumbled, straightening Bijou's bridle a little, "You keep telling yourself that."
Cam was about to give a remark with a toothy grin on his face but before he could, Jesse walked over to them.
"I heard you bickering like a pair of kids again. I was trying to catch a break, you know," he grumbled, sipping his coffee. He looked tired and fed up, which he was after having to fly for hours with the two of them. They'd bickered and fussed most of the way there, only taking breaks to sleep and eat.
"Sorry, Jesse," Cam smiled sheepishly. He was lucky to have been allowed to join them on this trip, since he'd had to whine and beg for Rush to let him go and see America for the first time, and he didn't want to go back and get a bad reference. Then he'd probably never be allowed to go again. Unless he was able to get good enough to attend a show as a competitor, of course... He grinned to himself.
“Looks like Cam’s listening to the voices in his head again,” Kehla smirked, seeing his expression change, and he threw her a dirty look.
“Enough,” Jesse interrupted before he could shoot back a response and start their fussing all over again, “I’m tired of listening to you two go on like this. Kehla, you almost ready to go?”
“Yeah, I’m ready.”
“Okay, good. Then let’s go,” Jesse nodded and they started walking to the starting point, Kehla leading Bijou along. The mare was alert, but she seemed more shy than excited by all the commotion around her. The complete opposite of how Atreus dealt with exciting situations, Cam noted to himself. Obviously his stallion was much more of a challenge to ride than this sweet young mare - although he’d never ridden her so he didn’t actually know - and he glanced at Kehla smugly.
“We should swap horses some time,” he suggested smartly, and she looked over.
“Why?”
“Oh, I just want to see how you’d do on Atreus.”
Kehla let out a sharp huff through her nose, but she wasn’t one to back down from a challenge.
“Okay,” she smirked, “Let’s do it when we’re back in England then. I’ll make Atreus look like a breeze.”
“Suuuuuuuure you will.”
“Oh yeah. Have you ever ridden a mare before?”
“Yup. People make them out to be a lot scarier than they are, you know,” Cam told her, puffing his chest out a little, “Plus you only ride the easy horses. Bijou, Don, Sol…. All the quiet horse.”
Kehla almost choked on her own disbelief at what this child was spewing.
“So you think you’re a better rider than me?”
“Weeeeell… I guess I am, yeah,” Cam grinned cheekily.
“Oh, okay. Okay. I’ll show you then,” Kehla huffed and puffed, “I’ll put you in your place and knock off some of that arrogance.”
“Deal,” Cam agreed excitedly, and he reached over to shake her hand. She stared him in the eyes defiantly as she met it.
“You’re going down, Kashevsky.”

Artist's note: My first painting on my new Cintiq I've been working on it on and off since I've been a little busy, but it's finally here. I struggled a bit with the shading but I'm fairly ok with how this turned out in the end... I think it helped that I could apply some painter techniques directly onto the screen. I do find that there's a difference between the colours on my laptop screen and I'm not sure which one is correct
