Description We're in Australia, like 40,000 years ago, the Pleistocene, about teatime. Dunno which territory, you Aussies can decide that.

A group of Homo sapiens sapiens gather around, hungrily.

Their men have recently felled a great wombat, Diprotodon optatum. Earlier today, having transported and butchered the quarry, they first tossed the head into naked flames to singe off the hair, then removed the blackened head once the hair was gone. Nearby, a hole was dug and filled with dry wood, and topped with stones collected from a nearby river. The pit was set a aflame, and the rocks were removed with sticks when they were red hot and placed into a pile. The Diprotodon's head was wrapped in damp bark and placed atop the hot rocks for several hours.
A man is appointed to unwrap the head. With a stone knife, he carefully carves into the wombat's face. Underneath the black charred skin, the hot, tender meat is steaming. The community(more than in view here, I hope) gather round, eager for the Diprotodon's face to be partitioned between them. They will eat well.

In his book Catching Fire: How Cooking Made Us Human, primatologist Richard Wrangham talks of the Aranda people of Aboriginal Australia. Their documented method of cooking meat involved digging a pit, filling it with dry wood and laying hot rocks atop it. The pit was lit up, and the rocks were removed once they were red-hot. The rocks were laid into a pile, and on top of the pile leaves were placed. They would wrap the meat in leaves to retain its juices, and occasionally plant foods, such as roots and tubers went in with it too. Herbs and spices would be added according to taste, and the food would be cooked for a few hours, potentially overnight. The meat was laid on leafy branches, carved with a stone knife, and served.
In this case I've used damp bark instead of leaves, which was the traditional wrapping used by the Gurindji people in Kalkarindji, as mentioned in this video (though aluminium foil is now used):www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxomlf…
This is also where I got the whole burning-its-skin-first-before-cooking-to-get-rid-of-the-hair bit from.
Even hunter-gatherers don't want to eat hair in their food, and some... .... civilised people do: www.youtube.com/watch?v=mAPBm_…

As I've learned, hunter-gatherers aren't always living on a knife's edge, merely concerned with getting meat and wild plants to survive another day - they like their food to be delicious like we do. Humans didn't suddenly develop a taste for good munchies 12,000 years ago with the advent of farming. Many of our culinary preferences are rooted in our evolutionary history - e.g. hunter gatherers universally preferred their meat to be tender and almost always cooked (with a few exceptions), as this improves digestibility, and made it much easier to chew. Studies showed that wild chimps consuming raw colobus monkey meat would only eat the soft parts (intestines) if given the the choice, discarding the rest of a colobus monkey carcass when many were available, as chewing the tough muscle was energy consuming, and pieces of monkey muscle were even present in chimp faeces, undigested. Cooking gets around this.

I dunno if Diprotodon was a common food item, but this may be a special occasion, it's a dangerous quarry after all...
And I was kinda inspired by the Icelandic svið, too.

Great drawing, the shading is well done. Poor Womby though. I dont think they would be great to eat as they are so tough.

Is it tough? Well.. it's been cooking for a while, so....

If they are anything like the wombats of today, I would think so. Wombats are rock solid, they look cute and cuddly but are firm and heavy.

From personal expirience I found pork jowls to be among the most tasty cuts specially if their cooked in a way that ensures that they are as tender as possible. I guess something like this would taste pretty good.

Never had pork, or any facial meat, but I can imagine. Yeah, heating hydrolyses the fibrous polypeptides, makes it more palatable.

And they choose the head to eat?

Or did the Megalania come ?

I'm sure they've got some more body parts being cooked elsewhere.
I was kinda inspired by Icelandic svið:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFXziq…

The head has got some good meat on it - like those jaw muscles look pretty big. My family tell me beef tongue is a very sought-after part of the body, quite tasty, and the brain is very fatty. Plus the cartilage is edible - ears etc, and I think the eyes contain some considerable nutriment as well.

The vid won't play but i assume it's a cooking vid

Yeah bit that's not a cow, tho nutrition wise, most likely no better than a cow

The thought of eating a tongue somewhat grosses me put as i imagine it being all drooly and stuff

But seeing how big a cow's is, that probably would be a decent meal, maybe grill it or something

I was bout to say brains are extremely dangerous to eat but then i remember that's only wjeb you eat another human's brain

I've had pig ear, it's got a nice crunch

Inuit kids eat seal eyes like it's candy so probably does have some nutrition

Texture wise, when eaten raw it's sorta like a jelly donut but salty

Try now:www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFXziq…
It's bigger than a cow, and probably tasty still.
Not when you cook it. Yeah, maybe some tongue curry would be good.
Yeah, that's raw brain, IIRC. Or at least Kuru is dangerous, because of the prions. Otherwise brains have a lot of fat in them.
Yup. Apparently, in Inuit slang, "vegetarian" means bad hunter.
I imagine eye is an acquired taste.

Oh God that looks gross, it looks like it's been mummified

they could at least rip the teeth out, would make it easier for the dog if people take the bones home

Was there even Rice in Australia thousands of years ago

XD, that's hilarious, guess Vegans won't get a choice of a Salad when living with Inuits

You probably don't even really have to chew it and actually get a taste of it

You could probably just toss it in the back of your mouth and swallow it whole

I remember i had to acquire a taste for things like Pig Feet

Kinda hated it as a kid

Love it now, if I was Islam, that'd be a ticket straight to Hell XD

Eh, I see heads in the butchers from time to tiem. Once you get around the looks, I'm sure it tastes pretty normal.
I'd eat it. Mostly because I like Icelandic music, namely Of Monsters And Men, and Sigur Rós... mind you the lead singer of the latter is a vegan.

I didn't mean aboriginals, but nowadays in general.

mhm: www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBrGKq…

I haven't tasted it, so I wouldn't know.

If you were Muslim, not Islam. Islam is the religion, muslim is the person. But yeah.. apparently that law originated in Judaism and purloined by Islam because farming pigs in arid environments is highly impractical, plus pork in the past may have contained parasites and stuff, so best not to eat it. Same with blood, too - Muslims and Jews can't eat it since it can carry barteria/pathogens postmortem, and at least in Islam i know that carrion is a no-no. These laws can be broken in survival situations though.
