My interpretation as a more "real" animal, like in 's works.

Blaziken is a dinosaur here; a theropod not unlike a therizinosaur or oviraptosaur. It's a fast runner capable of locomotion on two or four legs. The feathers are brightly colored to attract mates, since its speed and strength negate any need for stealth. This one is a male, indicated by the long white feathers on its back. (A female's are shorter and do not stand up in a crest.)

Why is it on four legs here? Quadrupedalism allows it to more effectively kick prey, rivals, and predators... and a Blaziken's legs are its best weapon.

Conservation status: Rare. They can no longer be found in regions accessible to ordinary trainers, thanks to overhunting. However, thanks to the efforts of breeders (chiefly Professor Rowan,) their offspring are available as pets and companions. One of the twelve "great successes" of captive breeding programs. (Others are as follows: Venusaur, Charizard, Blastoise, Meganium, Typhlosion, Feraligatr, Sceptile, Swampert, Torterra, Infernape, and Empoleon.)
