First tutorial, and I had expected it to be about drawing instead of making. : / Strange how things turned out.

The file has been in my computer since beginning of February, so I decided to clear it out.

Hope this will be useful. I made this with Kanda's 2nd Mugen's tassels in mind. I still have the turk head's knot and cap details to finish. -__-

Let me know how you find the tutorial, everyone. I might have word some of the stuff wrongly...

Gunto

This classification came into use about the Meiji Restoration.

There are two kinds which are considered gunto; one which looks like a Western rapier/ceremonial sword and one which looks like a traditional Japanese katana with slight differences.

The gunto katanas were bestowed on the army officers as indications of rank. I have no idea whether they were meant to be displayed only or were actually used in battle. The latter seemed possible, given that the cords were meant to help the user get a good grip on the katana. Say, to grab the cords would mean to be able to pull out the katana faster and to slice the enemy.

The gusto's pommel has a ring, which the cords were hung from. The cords' colour indicated rank of the officer.

Visit here to find out more about the tassels and what not. There are very good pictures to be used for reference.

Rant

I don't know how I found time to do this sort of thing. And the reason to spend so much time on it? The stupid calling to make it as accurate as possible when it's just about 5% of Mugen and hardly anyone would notice it. =.= I should use that time to do something like figuring material treatment to make a sturdy blade without using wood.

Some part of the brain must be insane enough for me to want to do it, even though I never actually plan for Jordan at that point of time.

I did looked for possible tassel decorations to be modify during the CNY festive market period ( it's really the best time to look for knick knacks and fake flowers - got a bunch of lotus too ), but being the darned picky person I am, I didn't get any.

Can you believe that I went to almost all the shops I know in SG just to find that shoelace ribbon? I ended up finding it unexpectedly in a shop at Chinatown. >_<

Almost went to the extent of making tassels already; checking out possible embroidery threads and whatnot. Took a look at the reference pictures of actual gunto cords, and saw that the material for the cords and tassels could be different; and thus couldn't care less anymore.

Why aren't one side of the cords brown?

After being frustrated by the inconsistency of Hoshino's illustrations, I decided to just follow the black X red colour scheme and left the cords as it is. The cords have appeared as full red, half brown half red and half purple half red at some point. Even Kanda's hair colour changes from bright blue, purple to mauve for 3rd uniform illustrations ( there's only 1 colour illustration - Vol 20 cover art for Jordan. Had to look at 3rd uniform ones for details… ). DDD:

This guy and his stuff will be black and red to me. *scowls* Good, simple and strong colours.
