Description        If I collected the lies I've been told I could make myself a skeleton. 206 hollow bones made of hollow words. The bigger lies are structural support, holding up the rest of me. 33 dishonest "I love yous" could be 33 intersecting vertebrae, composing my curving spine.

I could gather shards of my 10 favorite broken promises to be my long, sharp finger nails. The 10 runner ups fit on the tips of my toes.

Spiderweb truths, theirs and mine, will weave my new skin. An average of 20 feet of sticky substance, easily torn and easily rewoven.

Words will circulate like blood through the 100,000 miles of my veins. Cynicism creates phagocytes, attacking all foreign bodies of hope.

2 hazel eyes are formed from memories. Green from springs come and gone. Brown from Autumns just the same. Rods and cones of years gone by interpret the way I see things now.

My heart is love, beating on and on. 72 times 24, beating, beating, beating, never stopping till death. My soul, however, is borrowed from nothing else. It is always my own.

Cool! My first official critique. Thank you. I'll edit the piece as soon as I get a chance.

About the number thing. Aestheticly I prefer to write out numbers as well. But I figured since the piece grates science against art and you never see number written out in a textbook, to leave them digitized in the piece was fitting. That was kind of my line of thought with that. But if you think detracts from the piece then I would of course change it.

Now that you've explained it, I can see where you're coming from. In the end it's a purely aesthetic choice as you say, and your reasons for doing it make sense.

This is brilliant, do you perform slam poetry by any chance?

You would make a wonderful slam poet!

AnUrbanNomad In reply to CalicoWingedCat [2013-04-13 16:53:44 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much. I don't really do slam poetry. There's not really a venue anywhere around here to do that. Also it sounds terrifying.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CalicoWingedCat In reply to AnUrbanNomad [2013-04-13 17:12:37 +0000 UTC]

It isn't terrifying, honestly. It's just performing poetry, and it's often written like this piece, as opposed to page poetry.

That's sad that there's nowhere around where you live to do slam poetry, we have a shop that has a room in back where we perform every month.

And you're very welcome.

Wow, I like this! I love the notion of lies making up a person. Though, the heart of love looks out of place in such a hopeless, cynical, pessimistic body...but maybe that's just me.

TwistedAlyx In reply to AnUrbanNomad [2011-03-15 03:26:42 +0000 UTC]

No way, it practically writes itself. The human body--just the natural world in general, actually--is pure poetry. I mean, I love all the branching paths in a lung and how they're like a tree. And I love the way stretch marks pucker skin. I getcha, I promise.

AnUrbanNomad In reply to TwistedAlyx [2011-03-17 19:15:38 +0000 UTC]

TwistedAlyx In reply to AnUrbanNomad [2011-03-17 19:39:03 +0000 UTC]

I come back to that one a lot. Do you ever feel like we're all broken record? Like, catch yourself using the same kidns of images/words? I do and then I get frustrated because I usually don't really until later.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AnUrbanNomad In reply to TwistedAlyx [2011-03-19 04:35:17 +0000 UTC]

Of course but I think in some ways that's alright. Those images are pieces of us. It's like having a favorite unusual word or a specific sign off phrase. They're annoying if you use them too much but to use them frequently enough that people recognize them as yours, that's like a fingerprint.

Lucky! I'm in college but I'm only just wrapping up math, though admittedly I put it off forever. And I'll finish history next semester. I haven't had science in almost two years which breaks my heart. But I had psychology which involves science and I decided to hell with it all of it and I'm taking an astronomy class next semester which I'm excited about.

Thank you very much!
