Description Her body, while only alive for barely twenty years, will take, in my opinion, another two hundred to be fully decomposed. The days of rotting flesh, vermin and foul gasses have long passed, but it was sufficiently elongated as to drive away all who would interfere with this interment process. Those who fear the distorted sleeping face of an abandoned physical shell and refuse to return to this isolated field have forever left behind the possibility of laying eyes on a genuine treasure of fated circumstance.
A single stroke of lightning, gulfed down with an ocean of rain, curved her into a cloudy figure of glass, as though she had only lived as a manifested recollection of time's incessantly drumming cascades of sand. Internal organs, of course, were not spared and had begun their return to living ash, melding this sleeping statue's reproductive organs, hips and entrails into the prolific soil, sadly before the electric phenomenon occurred.  Her hair is a series of petroleum jets constantly flowing from the root of her crystal skull, renewing radiant, swerving halos of multicoloured lights around her heavenly features. Her open mouth, the only unsealed orifice remaining, is the abode of a breathtaking star of Bethlehem now shining in vain in a sky of cerulean freckles.
Never before have I wished for there to truly be a judgement day, if only such a female were to rise again. Or have I, while wasting months watching a corpse refusing to fade away, witnessed a being's ability to escape oblivion?  Perhaps, through the natural course of death, there is a manner of going beyond the potential of organic flesh, which we, humans, have never bothered to explore and that may lead to an ascension instead of a fall.

How is she nonhuman? She was a twenty or so year old struck by lightning.

kamalaksh In reply to Secrets-Of-Paranoia [2011-07-07 22:45:29 +0000 UTC]

Not quite, if you read closely, she was dead before her body was hit by lightning. At the end of the piece, the narrator says "we humans", which I had hoped would be clue enough to foil the girl as non-human.

Oh, I apologize, I must have misunderstood.

"the distorted sleeping face of an abandoned human's physical shell "

That part is where I got the idea she was human.

Allendra3 In reply to Secrets-Of-Paranoia [2011-07-07 15:56:22 +0000 UTC]

The description of her clearly makes her sound non-human. And aside from that, the artist has this description on his/her profile: "A scientist observes the fascinating decomposition of a non-human dead female. The beauty of such a process makes him almost regret his atheism, so much that his vocabulary betrays him."

kamalaksh In reply to Allendra3 [2011-07-07 21:50:00 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much for your attention to detail. You are absolutely right, she is non-human and this is why this scientist is so interested in watching her decomposition process, not only because it is a unique and beautiful coincidence, but because he is noticing how different death is for her species.
Thank you for your comments!

Atheist, scientist or philosopher? My impression of the narration falls between the latter two. Not that the 3 terms are mutually exclusive, but I personally can't really see any strong references to religion... it feels more like a dreamy scientist more than anything.

Whoa... Just whoa... This is awesome! As an Atheist, I commend you for seeing death in the non-sentimental way that most religious people do! And this is a phenomenal piece of writing, by the way.

hmmm...I think this reminds me of a Christian holiday, but I'm not sure...

Interesting how this is placed inside a scientist's mind...and that even that there are things that science cannot explain. And, of course, the fantastic imagery is nothing short of skillful, painting a glorious picture.

A well-deserved DD, indeed.

big words hurt brain! D:

no, actually this is amazing. as an atheist, this is sometimes how i feel, almost jealous of those who believe in a god, because they are never truly alone. though, on the other hand, i think science disproves many aspects of the bible and other religions feel too... strict. really i'm kind of an outcast

Zapheil In reply to Phen01 [2011-07-07 02:43:22 +0000 UTC]

Man, that's how I feel a lot, too. My whole family is Catholic, my parents especially, and I go to a Catholic high school, but there's just something about me that I simply cannot believe in the existence of gods. It was pretty lonely before I made friends who weren't quite so religious.

Phen01 In reply to Zapheil [2011-07-07 03:12:53 +0000 UTC]

oh wow, i feel so sorry for you!
i've generally been accepted by many people in my school (aka christian mass) despite my numerous accidental slashes at the religion. however, religiously, i have nothing to turn to except chance if something life-changing happens like one of my parents dies. in fact, i thought about that earlier today. what a coincidence!

nevertheless, i wish you the best of luck. my christian grandma went through a small period of depression when i told her i was atheist.

enough of me pouring my useless crap on you though, i'mma go play video games

Zapheil In reply to Phen01 [2011-07-07 04:36:26 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I didn't mean to sound like I was rejected by society or anything. I get along fine with religious people, it's just there's that barrier of different fundemental beliefs that's hard to cross sometimes.

I feel that with Atheism, I am opened to MORE beauty then a theist. As in death, as well as life, it allows one to deconstruct the specifics farther before hitting the all powerful "it was god's doing" answer. And not just death, but life as well. where as a Christian might see life as something that is just... there, I would see it as the chance occurrence of billions or years.
Look at your hand if you will for a second. study it.
now look at the paw or an animal
now at the flipper of a fish
With scientific eyes your hand becomes not something made willy-nilly by a higher being, but something that was crafted carefully over melenia from species to species.

Ramen27 In reply to Lucario52 [2011-07-07 02:11:03 +0000 UTC]

On the contrary, a theist might not see the hand as made "willy-nilly", but crafted carefully by a being who's genius we humans could not comprehend.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lucario52 In reply to Ramen27 [2011-07-07 02:41:22 +0000 UTC]

yes, but in comparaison, wouldn't the rest of the world seem equely complex as well, regardless of the care that was taken to make then? Going along with what your saying, equel care would have had to be put into a paw, and a flipper, making the hand seem only as important.
The way I look at it makes it seem specal, a delibriate step above the flipper and paw.
