Description I asked Julio
where he wanted to die

and he smiled a smile that spoke
of his heritage (how he looked so old
and wise at fourteen,
I’ll never know.)

And he said.

“I would like it very much
if I died in Oregon, because”

[he always said because
‘cause he was taught
proper English unlike
us Americans]

“how many people
get to die in Oregon?”

I could only ask how many,
to which his answer was

“Not nearly enough.
Not nearly enough.”

I live in Oregon. I think it's pretty obvious why he would want to spend his last days here. But maybe I'm just biased.

I laughed at the end, haha. This must have been a real conversation, or based on one. It's so arbitrary, but it carries a meaning at the very least in the individuality of the person: perhaps I'm just naïve, as a Canadian, but I've been to Oregon. Are we to know why this fellow wishes to live his last days there? I don't think so. But we don't need to; it's his own aspirations, and it's just not possible to fully understand them.

Sometimes i wonder why it is that modern society has advanced so much and so fast that teenagers think of how they want to die years before it's acceptable.

Haunting.

I am sure that there is some deeper meaning that I don't get and my lack of knowledge bothers me a little, but it doesn't prevent me from enjoying this piece. The combination of a child character and the topic of death, described in such a manner... it truly makes me stop and think.

The last two verses... I could imagine these words being spoken by an old man, not a fourteen year old. It's frightening and makes me wish I knew more about the meaning of the poem.

Truly worthy of a DD. Good job.

My son, he has the look of an old soul. Even as a newborn, people would look at him and tell me that he had the face of an older man.
