Description Rillaboom
Fierce, manly, and dark. He looks a bit too much like a simple animal.

What happened to cuteness and the cute red and yellow patterns of Grookey?

Redesign:

The spikier hair keeps the Grookey and Twackey aspects.

The red fur on the arms is in a "cooler" more dynamic pattern while retaining the original placked pattern style and colour as Grookey. Redish orange is also a more fiery and exciting colour.
The original patterns are also kept in the hair/leaf backbones (reminicent of the strands on Zacyan's locks too. Could be satisfactory to the player to find in his Pokemon the same feel the cover coveys.)

The green taken away from the arms is balanced out (I think) well enough by the original Grookey fur tone that makes a comeback.
This also allows the eyes to retain that ferocious red colour and grey rims and brow without it looking too menacing; and thus too far a cry too Grookey's cuteness, that the player most likely loved.

To reenvigorate the wild and feroceous aspect of Rillaboom, the patterns of its body were added back but carrying that darkness. In angular and dynamic shapes they work both as adding wildness and excitement and the dark and mature colours that make Rillaboom unique.

The drum was kept in his back, because it adds a bit to his Gorilla aesthetic as something more than just an animal; like bulbasaur. Plus it makes more sense where he gets it from; it just grows on him.

The bang was kept. I was reticent at first, but it adds a bit of assimmetry and junglyness I think. It sort of is reminiscent of his chest pattern.

His chest for that matter was kept muscular, but made into a more typical Grookey pattern, maybe reminding us of his lost tail, with the curvy mid section line.

The beige feet and ribs are closer to the yellow tones of Grookey while looking more like skin too. It concords nicely with the green I think.

The rib marks were added in the end to add a sense of musculature like Rillaboom's previous abs but more gentle and cute.

Looking at other fanart, I sort of thought, "Yeah, Rillaboom as he is makes more sense as a design than all the others. He is much more unique (no offence). But I also had a lot of issues with him, mainly because he was the reason why I switched from Grookey to Scorbunny. He is way too different from Grookey, doesn't seem like the same Pokemon but evolved, at least to me. You know, each person has their own way they look at Pokemon evolution, but lately I've come up with a set of light rules for evolution. For a long time I couldn't find a satisfying result for Rillaboom and even thought that just making Rillaboom more expressive would be enough, but now I couldn't be more satisfied with my design I think.
