Technically speaking, Sonic is the only one who uses true speed from natural abilities. Shadow uses technology (his power skates) and Silver uses psychic powers.

Actually, it's strongly implied that Shadow and Silver both have natural speed just like Sonic. But Sonic's the one with the natural talent and SKILLS for speed.Β

Actually, Sonic can run fast is because of his Power Sneakers. In Sonic Labyrinth, Eggman took off his Power Sneakers and replaced with a fake pair. Thus, they slowed down his speed.

Eggman didn't just took off Sonic's sneakers, he gave him the ones that slow Sonic down. That's why he is slower in Sonic Labyrinth. Maybe Sonic couldn't take them off...

He can run that fast without them, his feet would just burn, those shoes are only friction proof and Sonic can do anything fast as long as he knows how to do it, he's the fastest thing alive not his shoes.

Silver is Sonic's only real contender for the title of "fastest thing alive". shadow uses propulsion shoes to accelerate to high speeds, which immediately disqualifies him, but silver uses only his natural abilities, and it has been shown that Silver IS, in fact, as fast as sonic. Silver being slow is something i disagree with. also, i theorized that Silver might just be Sonic's descendant, or maybe Silver is his own great-great-great (ect.) grandfather.

Not really. While I'm not a huge fan of Sonic himself, he's the only one who is naturally the fastest thing alive. He doesn't use anything to help him. Both Silver and Shadow use things to help them move at high speeds. Silver uses psychokinetic powers as his aid to "run" fast and Shadow uses technology (his propulsion shoes).

Silver can and does run fast naturally in certain games such as Sonic Generations for the 3DS. And in terms of using psychokinesis to run fast, that is still using his natural abilities.Β
For Shadow, it's strongly implied that he does in fact share Sonic's speed and agility without his skates. Based off of his Rival Battle in Sonic Generations, it can be assumed that Shadow's natural speed is turned into fuel for his skates or something, because he still needs Rings to boost just like Sonic, and the energy is being blasted out of his skates when he boosts. Since Sonic's boost comes from using the Ring Energy absorbed into his body to amp himself, for Shadow it should work like his skates take the natural speed that Shadow has and converts that into the energy released from the jets in the soles, and the Ring Energy absorbed to boost adds more energy that the skates release, thus causing Shadow to blast off like a rocket.Β

That's a very good point.
Very interesting theory there about Shadow's natural speed, his skates and the Ring energy given. I can see how they all correlate to each other. He was slightly faster than Sonic in SA2B as well. I also wonder if Ring energy applies to Knuckles too. I know he's nowhere near as fast as those three hedgehogs, but he was pretty speedy in SA2B and the games before it.

A fast character indeed with the help of his psychokinetic powers. Without them he wouldn't be. Same with Shadow who uses technology in the form of propulsion shoes.
