Duty to protect an entire country in time of dire need, more important than one's family?

Yes. Definitely.
In times of need, that's what worthy rulers do.
That's what true rulers do.

And that's why being a ruler is insanely hard and demanding.
That's why rulers tend to be utterly alone, in front of their decisions.

When Luna faced Celestia as NMM,
Celestia couldn't afford some ill-placed sensitivity and start to cry some very late and useless tears.
It wasn't the time for emotion. It was the time for cold and hard reason.

When NMM faced her, Celestia didn't have any other option than banishing her sister.
And spending a whole millenium, alone with her regrets. Her regrets for having failed at being a sister.


Of course, in her position, Celestia should have seen Luna growing resentful.
She should have taken some time to be with her sister and settle any problem.
She should have seen it coming.

But she didn't.
So, once again, when NMM faced her, Celestia did what she had to do. She did the only thing she could do.


Duty is duty.
It doesn't care about feelings, be it Celestia's or a commoner's.
It only give you the choice between bad and worse.

Family is the most important thing for a living being.

Your country doesn't know you personally, but your family does.
If you loose your reputation as a ruler, then you're a bad ruler.
If you loose your reputation as a family member, then you're bad person.

Country doesn't cares for your feelings, even if you are the ruler.
But your family does.

Family is the most important thing in the world.

Only an idiot would sacrifice his own blood relative to save a bunch of people he doesn't know.

Sometimes, it's better to be a villain in face of your people than to be a traitor to your family.

Even when priviledging said family would doom an entire nation?

Now, that is foolish. And incredibly egoistical too.

If I lose my reputation as a family member?
How would I lose that, exactly?
If I learned my brother had some terrorist projects, I would have no qualms telling him to the authorities.
Even stricking him down with my own hands, if needed.

Knowing me personally?
And so what? What good does it do, if my family knows me, but my country stands in ruins?

Only a coward, only the most despicable being would have a family relative saved at the price of dooming an entire country.
That would be what a true idiot is.
We don't know them? Well, they have no importance, then.
We only share a common history, a common language, a common culture.
And we are only part of a State that has achieved more than any of us could ever dream of.


Sometimes? And when would that be?
