Description Line from the happy mask salesman still gives me the chills..

***Edit: Skull Kid is not for sale and I am not taking commissions at this time! Sorry!

***Edit 2: Sorry, but I don't have a pattern for Skull Kid!  He was done free-hand because the directions were too complex to write out.  The only patterns I have are available in the "Patterns" folder of my gallery.

So, this is my pride and joy that I've been working on for a few weeks, many long hours a day. This bud is about 18" tall. Add a few more inches with the hat. He does have wire support because I wanted him to be poseable, including his darn fingers. His mask is removable (you can see him unmasked in the mutli-view link I've provided below). The mask details and Skull Kid's face are needle-felted because I wanted them to REALLY stand out. The face is one of the more important things to me, which is why I usually make eyes and such out of felt, or as of late, needle-felting. And plus I can't embroider.. Am I the only one who has problems controlling where the thread stays in crocheted works?? ._. Whatever the case, I seem to suck at embroidering, while needle-felting makes me happy because the results are much better for me.

The Legend of Zelda series has got to be my favorite game series of all time. I've been intending to make some of the characters from the games, but I waited it out because I wanted to improve my crocheting skills before giving it a shot. Definitely have to do justice to the characters of the greatest series ever! As I've said before, I chose to make Skull Kid first because:

1. He doesn't have a human face, which I'm not quite ready to try yet, but I still get to ease into making something with a humanoid form
2. Majora's mask is insanely cool

I hope you guys like how he turned out! I definitely gave it my best effort!

I am with you. The items I make are completely freehand. I am self taught in crocheting so it is a bit difficult for me to read patterns. Trial and error. Best part about crocheting...you don't like the way a stitch looks, pull it and try again. Is there any advice with needle felting or felt in general that you can give? I just started experimenting with adding felt. I tried embroidering as well, but it has not been a desire outcome.

I just wanted to say how amazing I thought this was!  I've checked out your other works and you're very talented.  I really enjoyed viewing them all.

Any tips on getting started on making stuff like this?  I've never crocheted before, but I'm always looking to dive into new things.  Are there any books/tutorials you would recommend?

aphid777 In reply to tdmurphy [2015-01-07 23:53:27 +0000 UTC]

Sorry for the late response!  Thank you for stopping by  I'm glad you like my work!

As for starting out, I'd suggest just trying to learn the stitches first.  For these kind of toys, the most important things to learn are: magic circle, chain stitch, single crochet stitch, single crochet increases and decreases, and slip stitch.  There are a ton of YouTube videos online that can help you figure out how to make each kind of stitch.  I was crocheting just flat squares for a while to get a hang of the tension and how to hold everything before starting on actual projects.  This blog: www.planetjune.com/blog/ also has great tutorials and free patterns  I hope my explanation helps!
