Haha reminds me of my Cayo (coral reef) Dragons serie. Even the muzzle is a bit similar, tho in super different style. Amazing work!

Hey, thanks so much!Β I used a little scale maker tool, I've been itching to try it out for ages. Here's tutorial on it if you likeΒ [link] . I just used an old plastic card instead of brass sheet though and it works fineΒ Β I made the basic figure out of regular Sculpey and then I baked the whole thing before putting a thin layer of Sculpey Firm where I wanted the scales and used the tool to create them and pressed them down afterwards so that they were nice and flat like fish scales.

The scales are very impressive throughout the work. On the top fin and it's horns because of the detailing in the clay itself the paint looks dirty. The different colors complement each other and blend very well. I think the head is very impressive but the antenna-like features were an unnecessary add on. The legs and tail were sculpted very well. On the fins of the tail you were sort of lazy, I know it took a long time but it takes away from the rest of the sculpture.
Overall this is a very nice piece of work that is very pleasing to the eye.

Those scales are so good! I saw that you did a similar technique on the Drogon sculpture. Do you lay each of those on by hand or do you have some sort of trick that makes it easier? I worked on a snake sculpture recently and the scales were ridiculously hard. I ended up with large roundish overlapping disks, which worked ok for the character I was referencing but aren't terribly realistic.

Thanks a lot! The Drogon ones were all applied by hand, I didn't really feel the scale tool would be appropriate for him. So sadly no tricks to make it easier, it did take forever and was not fun! I think the scale tool would work very well for a snake though, their scales are pretty uniform. You would just need to shape the tool slightly differently to be more pointy I guess.

This is incredible! The colors actually remind me of when I took a trip to the great barrier reef and got to take a tour on a glass bottom boat- lots of blues and greens.

Wow that's really nice of you to say. I really wasn't sure about the colours when I was painting but they did come together well.
