VOYAGE INTO THE UNKNOWN-SCULPTURESCommunity Volunteer- Mrs-Durden Β has started a new project called βVoyage Into the Unknownβ.
The concept:
The idea is to browse through a category or sub-category that you don't necessarily visit frequently, or that you browse the least, and collect some of the art you find stands out! The point of this is to challenge ourselves and discover new art in the process!

That is great! I know what you mean about time... I'm still working on a dragon like creature after a long time. But it seems your time was well spent.

How did you do the scales? Did you sculpt them on the dragon or use a tool + extra clay?

tallydragon In reply to Procrastinisha [2013-10-20 00:08:49 +0000 UTC]
Hi, on this dragon I added scales one at a time using little balls of clay, and shaped them with my fingers/tools. This works really well with original sculpey (which this is made out of), but when I use super sculpey I tend to carve them out instead since super sculpey is so soft.

I love your details! Where did you get the eyes? And were you able to fire/bake the sculpture with no damage or alteration to the eye?

tallydragon In reply to Artemis-OceanWolf [2013-06-13 00:59:02 +0000 UTC]
Thank you! I ordered them online from Van Dykes Taxidermy. They're glass eyes, which can be baked safely at the temperatures needed to cure polymer clays like sculpey. Plastic eyes won't survive an oven, only glass!

can I commision a dragon from you just like this with a lil color? I adore this so much and it would make an amazing addition to my dragon collection.

Beautiful! The amount of detail is just breathtaking! I am so amazed at all the extrodinary detail you got into this little guy, and the finished paint job sounds amazing. I love his motion and he does have the cutest expression I am sure your roomate about died getting a dragon of her very own.
I have tried working in sculpey before but either I fail or just don't have a good type (mostly likely the first) cause nothing ever seems to go right. I have never baked a piece with eyes in place (or with that beautiful an eye for that matter) does the glass do alright? I work in polymer and I know that its a rather low heat technically since many of those clays can go in a regular oven, but I just wasn't sure. Is there a place you can buy these premade eyes as well?
