Description At last, I can post this! He is done!

This was a gift for my bestest buddy and roomie--a very, very belated Christmas/birthday gift. (I have learned an important lesson--dragons sculptures make wonderful and afordable gifts, but are totally impractical, because they take forever to make! with the insane amount of time that goes into these, no more freebies! but, this one time it was worth it). She was witness to my previous dragon being built, and to it sitting on my desk half-painted for many months, and kept telling me how much she loved it because he was so twisty and loopy. So, with that in mind, I set out to make a similar dragon that really played off the coils.

He's smaller than the previous dragon, but is probably still a good six or seven inches long total (more if he were straight). He's got the same basic style, so I guess he's another member of my oriental dragon species that I made up. I really love these guys. I like to make them look like they're in motion, like they're in the middle of playing or arching or twisting around.

The final version of this guy was painted in green and silver (with a pale yellow belly)--yup, you got it, Slytherin colors. My roomie's a huge Slytherin buff, so I had to do it. I will probably post a few other favorite shots of this, and then anything else will go into scraps if I feel like putting up more angles, just to avoid cluttering up my gallery.

This was my first dragon that I haven't kept, and dammit, I miss the charismatic little guy. I originally thought I couldn't recreate a dragon (hence, why I made this guy instead of trying to replicate the other), but I think in this case I may try. He was also the first of my dragons that my dad never got to see, so I want to make another of him so I can put him on the shelf with the others, sort of a sentimental thing (yes, there are others--all in half-built states of utter haphazardness).

Anyway, Sculpey clay, wire and foil armature, glass eyes, swarzovski crystal in the forehead.

This is so amazing! I would love absolutely one of these.. so do you think I could nick this posture your dragon is holding? because i'm a beginner dragon-maker really, so I'm finding it difficult to sculpt my dragon with a correct - looking pose! If you are immensely kind enough to let me use the posture, and I completely understand if you don't, I will mention you and your amazing work when showing it to anyone and posting it online. I will not be using the same scale work and I am not painting mine, so please have a think. THANK YOU!! xxxxx

Thank you, I'm glad you like it! As long as you give credit and make a different dragon (and with a different build the pose'll probably have to get tweaked anyway), I feel like it isn't really possible to copyright a pose...otherwise all the good poses would already be taken and there'd be nothing left for people to experiment with. I've even accidentally found myself making dragons in sitting poses that are really similar to some famous dragon sculptor's works...but the *dragon* was different, and darn it, there's only so many ways a dragon can sit. ^_^;; I'd like to see it when you're done!

Wow! Thank you so much! I am making it as we speak My scales have got blue and white shaded patterns in them and it has four horns with no scales and the moustache thing that Chinese dragons have! Oh, and the month of my dragon is closed, so it doesn't look the same and it definitely isn't as good! but yes, I will definitely give credit and I'll show it to you when I'm done!

Again, thank you thank you thank you!!

How did you do the scales? Did you sculpt them on the dragon or use a tool + extra clay?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

tallydragon In reply to Procrastinisha [2013-10-20 00:08:49 +0000 UTC]

Hi, on this dragon I added scales one at a time using little balls of clay, and shaped them with my fingers/tools. This works really well with original sculpey (which this is made out of), but when I use super sculpey I tend to carve them out instead since super sculpey is so soft.

tallydragon In reply to Artemis-OceanWolf [2013-06-13 00:59:02 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I ordered them online from Van Dykes Taxidermy. They're glass eyes, which can be baked safely at the temperatures needed to cure polymer clays like sculpey. Plastic eyes won't survive an oven, only glass!

Beautiful! The amount of detail is just breathtaking! I am so amazed at all the extrodinary detail you got into this little guy, and the finished paint job sounds amazing. I love his motion and he does have the cutest expression I am sure your roomate about died getting a dragon of her very own.

I have tried working in sculpey before but either I fail or just don't have a good type (mostly likely the first) cause nothing ever seems to go right. I have never baked a piece with eyes in place (or with that beautiful an eye for that matter) does the glass do alright? I work in polymer and I know that its a rather low heat technically since many of those clays can go in a regular oven, but I just wasn't sure. Is there a place you can buy these premade eyes as well?
