Description This is a quick sculpt I did over last spring break that I finally got around to painting. He's my fastest dragon yet--mostly because of no wire (except in the horns) and minimal scales! This is something I must explore further...

I call him a siamese dragon because his markings are based on siamese cat coloring, and because I feel like there's something slightly cattish about the cheeky little guy. As you can see, he's a very different build than my normal oriental-type dragons...more like a cat-lizard-ferret. I picture him as having an extremely short fur coat. If his eyes were open, they would be blue.

More pictures when I manage to take some good ones!

Original sculpey, wire, apoxie sculpt, acrylics, matte varnish.

So I just wanted to thank you, because your dragon sculptures and this one in particular was what inspired me to to start sculpting, when I found this dragon a couple years ago . I haven't really posted any pictures of what I've sculpted, but I'm planning on posting more.  I still have a lot to learn, and was wondering what ten tips you would give to a beginner sculptor. Thank you again I'm a big fan.

I guess I'm gonna have to get me some sculpey-- I've worked with clay, plastic and wood, so a new medium would be good.

i has a question...i really want to do a sculpture of one of my dragons i want it to be a good size like i could hold it in both hands, what type of clay should i use? and i want to bake it also and paint it etc. do you think u could help?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

tallydragon In reply to oukume [2010-03-13 13:48:39 +0000 UTC]

I only know about the types of clays I use, which are original sculpey and super sculpey. Both of these have strengths and weaknesses and are baking clays--the one thing I suggest if you use sculpey and are making a larger dragon, is use a wire/tinfoil frame inside the dragon instead of making it solid clay. The amount of time you have to bake depends on how thick your clay layer is, which you can cut down on by filling it with foil--otherwise a large dragon can take hours! Original sculpey is a little bit firmer; I like to use this when I'm adding detail by building up; eg making scales and then putting them on top. Super sculpey is softer and is better for carving detail into (but easy to squish your own work by accident), and I'm told it's stronger when it's baked.

Hope this helps!

tallydragon In reply to oOkamiHorOo [2009-11-14 00:31:31 +0000 UTC]

He's mostly made out of origial sculpey. I know super sculpey and sculpey firm are stronger, but I prefer the texture of origianal sculpey.

Man, your dragons never cease to amaze me! So awesome, and cute!
And I agree, this guy looks very cat-ish, with that sort of "cat air" about him, especially because of the set of his neck and head and his expression. Looks just like my cats when they are trying to ignore us and pretend to sleep.
