Description This little fellow is my first full sculpey piece, and I am so proud of him. Oriental dragon of my own design (based of course on the traditional oriental dragon, but in my own style and with some differences), made of sculpey, wire, and foil, with glass eyes. I really wanted to capture the movement and flow I always thought those dragons should have--and the flexibility! Its a wonderful form to work with, so many things you can do with a build like that, but at the same time I wanted to to be realistic--belieavable. So this playful guy was born! (he looks more playful from his other sides, this is his mellower side). He's, like, my artistic masterpiece, and for once I'm actually pleased with something I did (although my feelings are still ambiguous about the very large tail fan, which is for swimming. but, enough of my rambling).

This is the alabaster white version; I'm now experimenting with it in reds, but I consider this to be a finished version in its own right (because he's just so charming in white).

Love it!  So beautiful and it does look like it can move any minute, I love it's little talons!  The horns are soooo neat!  I would really like to see one in purple and blue hues.

There is someone who also does amazing dragons. If you want to improve perhaps you could swap ideas, she doesn't make the scales usually and it really gives your dragon character.

I will LOVE to see this in other colors, painted or other clays.

oriental is now a derogatory term. you aren't allowed to say it anymore you might offend somebody. I strongly recommend you change the title of this deviation, since it is such a beautiful work, I just don't like seeing it tarnished by such filth

BAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA i LOLd so hard when i read this xD im asian. im more highly offended by your idiocy more than the word oriental xD It's not like she titled it....Squinty Eyed Chink Dragon or something

tallydragon In reply to shton [2012-05-18 20:24:23 +0000 UTC]

*blinks* Quite honestly, where I'm from, this has never been considered an offensive term. At least not as a descriptor--I'd certainly never call a *person* an "oriental"--I won't even call them "asian" if I know where someone is actually from, since it's a little offensive to lump all asian ethnicities together like they're the same thing.

But even in regions where oriental is a derogatory term, it's offensive when you use to to describe PEOPLE. I don't think anyone has ever thought it offensive to call an oriental rug an oriental rug--it's a descriptor of certain stylistic traits originating from a general region. "Oriental dragon" is still a widely used term, since dragons aren't people, and artwork depicting dragons certainly aren't people. Where I am it's often considered *more* PC than "chinese dragon", since dragons in that style are certainly not exclusive to China, and already too many people think that "asian" equals "china". I've honestly never encountered anyone who found this usage offensive before. Thank you for the food for thought.

I've already reported this as a racially hateful deviation since you've refused to change the title. I can't believe someone would be so stubborn about something that is so clearly offensive

I knew someone would BITCH about the title. I love how easily offended everyone is these days.

so what do you call oriental rugs!!! Your silly. Political Correctness can go too far sometimes. You need to lighten up her intent was never to insult. But the Orient is a place therefore items from that part of the world could be described as Oriental. Is the item beautiful? yes . Then how could you describe it as offensive? I think you need to get a hobby or go for a walk. there are alot more truly offensive things in the world. This piece is beautiful and only makes the world a better place. I'm sure you were truly to help but I think that if we let the piece for itself that is enough.

Wow. And I can't believe what an arrogant blowhard you are. I never said I wasn't changing anything, I said I was thinking about what you said--and THANKED you for the food for thought. But you do not have the right to tell me what to do, and to accuse me of being racist for using a word that, where I was raised, is not, is offensive. All my life, I have bought books on "oriental dragons", and "oriental dragon" figurines (even Windstone dragons, which are about the most famous dragon sculpts out there, call them "oriental dragons". Have you emailed the company to complain?). I took a semester of japanese, and MY SENSEI called them oriental dragons.

In other words, the word is NOT "clearly offensive" to me, and why should I trust what some random person on the internet tells me? Should I believe it if someone on DA tells me "western" is offensive now, and I can't call dragons western dragons anymore? Should I just do whatever anyone says at the snap of a finger? I'm not changing anything until I've gotten to do my own research. But even after explaining my reasoning to you, you jump the gun, almost as if you're looking to pick the fight.

I used a word that in my cultural region is not derogatory (newsflash: the culture where you are is not representative of the whole world), with completely inoffensive intentions, and I listened to your complaint with open ears. And before I even have a chance to form an opinion on an issue that is completely new to me, you start accusing me of racism. But I guess you didn't want me to form my own opinion...yours must be the only opinion that matters.

This is absurdly fantastic! Have you ever checked into the sculptures that Melody Pena produces? Her windstone dragon series?

This oriental beauty is very similar to her work.
I'm an avid collector of her dragon series.
Or, I was. Haha, low on the funds.

Keep up the great work!

This may sound a little stalker-ish, but I even have one of your dragon shots as my background. They are so cute!

tallydragon In reply to oukume [2010-03-13 13:52:56 +0000 UTC]

I order from van dykes taxidermy--don't worry, even though it's a taxidermy site, they're just regular glass craft eyes. (my local craft store only sells plastic eyes--these will NOT survive in the oven!!). You can also search ebay; I just pick van dykes because I like their selection. Usually the eye I get is called "bird eye". Here's their site: [link]

i left a comment on another piece but, i have another question, should i make a frame to work on and if yes then how so?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

tallydragon In reply to oukume [2010-03-13 13:50:34 +0000 UTC]

Like I said in the other comment, for big dragons I do suggest a frame. I use aluminum wire; you can get this in craft stores (bare floral wire will also do). Then I bulk up around the frame with either wire mesh or tinfoil--if you're short on access to craft stores, just tightly packed tinfoil will do. Make a basic form, then cover it in a thin layer of clay, and then work details into the clay.

Do you know all the anatomy of the dragon? or do you get like a template thing to get the basic shapes of it?
Or is it that you can draw them so well you can just sculpture them well?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

tallydragon In reply to O-d-a-s [2009-02-10 15:42:01 +0000 UTC]

Hah, well, I think I actually sculpt dragons better than I draw them. ^_^; My mind words in a 3-D way. I make up the dragon anatomy as I go along, but what helps me is that I'm overall well versed in real life anatomy of various animals--in fact, I teach an anatomy lab in my university. When you know the real life structures well, it's easier to make up a fantasy creature that looks realistic. ^_^

LightoftheHeart [2009-01-09 02:25:09 +0000 UTC]

This is amazing, he looks so sweet! I know many people must ask this, but how do you do his facial scales? Do you just shape them and gently stick them on? Oh, and I love the tail fan.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

tallydragon In reply to LightoftheHeart [2009-01-10 02:15:19 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! ^_^ Yup, that's basically it. I just gently pat the scale down. With really small scales it's hard to shape them ahead of time, but you develop a feel for how big the teeny-tiny ball of clay must be for the size scale you want, so in that case you can add the ball and then shape it afterwards by pressing on it.
