I like that the shadow in the picture of Chairman Mao is in the opposite direction of the shadow in the actual photograph. Excellent!

The really interesting thing about Mao's picture is that it is redone every single year. Each picture hangs for one year and is them replaced by a new one. I have no idea where the old ones go. I saw a lot of Chinese cites, towns, plane, train and bus stations, and never saw another picture of him as big as this one. BTW, Mao is still revered by some of the older people, but most Chinese now recognize the excesses of the Cultural Revolution he inspired, as well as the massive deaths due to starvation during that time. Mao started out with good ideas and noble intentions, but fanatics engender fanatics, and life became hell for millions of the people that survived. Nowadays, of course, it's all about making money, buying a car, and maybe even that house in the suburbs, with a golf club membership for the wealthy. it's a different place now.

If a photo makes one think deeper rather than be dismissed at face value, then I believe that the photo served it's purpose.
A photo that leads to something more.
Thank you for all your comments. All of it.

Great shot, the picture's presence is very imposing like the man himself. Unfortunately very little people truly know Mao outside of the context of "red" vs "blue". A man who accomplished great things for his country and also committed some horrible mistakes. Unfortunately my friend most of the world still isn't ready to look at and examine Mao from a objective point of view and see him for what he really was, not a saint nor a devil, but just a man.
And congrats on the beautiful Olympic opening my friend.

I love the balance and repetition. Just for composition's sake, I would cut off the stairwell. Great photojournalism.

It would have had to have been re-shot to preserve the square frame nature though to get rid of the stairwell, and keep with being unmanipulated.
