Description This sketch of Alex took about 2 hours, 4 if you count looking (without joy) for my pencils.

Its a little heavier than my normal style, as the only pencil I could find was charcoal.

I'm not sure I got the teeth quite right, but the smile is certainly his. After some encouragement from my other half, I gave it to his wife. No idea where it is now.

oh lovely...
you've certainly brought out a lightness in his eyes.
i also like that you're not afraid to put in the lines of his faces... i know sometimes it's easier to spare someone the details of their age in a drawing, but here it adds so much character to the picture - he looks so cheery. made me smile when i saw it.

great work mate

Thanks for this Ali.

As I view it, the lines on our faces are the result of a life of expression. Blank canvasses are hard to read, wrinkles are little folds of wisdom, and Alex is rewarded by a smile permanently embedded into his skin.

...Besides which, I lack any skill in interpretation I can only hope to draw what I see, and am always amazed at artists such as yourself who can condense characters into defined strokes. Gets me in trouble, frustrates me a fair bit, but occasionally it pays off. I'm glad you like this one. I've certainly got a soft spot for it too.

i agree with you about facial lines... i am so very much against the idea of getting rid of lines because those are what define your life - whether you've led a smiling or a frowning life hehe

there is something to be said for drawing what you see... so don't say its because of a lack of interpretation. i don't deliberately interpret things, its just me coming through my work i think...

but yes, this is definitely great work, congrats

Thanks Ali.

It'll be interesting to see whether we keep our opinions when those lines start creeping this side of the canvas and we find our friends botoxing their way back to carelessness

I'm really glad you came by my gallery, and hope to be able to post a piece you've inspired soon.

oh i can't wait to see it

no, i'm firmly against botox... i think its stupid. and anti-wrinkle creams target delusional idiots imo...

i think, grow old with grace... that's much more interesting that growing old as an ageing plastic shell

Incase you missed it, that piece is up as Self in Colour .

I hadn't got your post about the stock libraries at that point, so used a flat block of colour.

I also treated Evey to a similar treatment, putting her against a browser window I happened to have open. I'm keeping that one in my scraps until the artist supplying the background says its ok to post this as an example in my gallery. You can see it here , if you're interested. I actually quite like the way the browser scroll bar interacts with the composition.

no no i saw it... havent got around to commenting just yet sorry...

that treatment of Evey looks interesting... i think you're heading in a good direction. just take care that you still retain what was good about the drawing in the first place - you don't want to lose that in colour

I hear you. Its just quite addictive this whole colour thing. Suddenly I'm coming over all Dorothy Gale... I'm definitely not in Kansas anymore.

Amzing, i think the reason i cant draw people is cause u have to draw them with 3d sense and like all my drawings are 2d style, Another amazing piece.
I always start with the eyes too

Thanks for this (and the fav and add).

I've got to be honest, I can't draw any other way. Some people (like yourself) are able to condense a 3D object into a set of lines, creating a whole new entity in 2D. This means you can create characters, tattoos, graphic art, cartoons, sprites, and so on.

I, on the other hand can only create an impression of the 3D object, endlessly going over the mental image in my head until the page is sufficiently dark to simulate the missing third dimension. I know it sounds odd, but I really struggle with this. I'm only ever going to be able to replicate things. Others get to CREATE.

Hmmmm.... Probably a bit heavy for a response here. Erm, sorry about that

The eyes are definitely the most realistic part They are full of expression

Thanks rainytown. I'm glad you like it. I did the eyes first. Once I knew I'd got them right, I worked on the rest.
Glad you feel it paid off

Hehe it's really interesting which part of the face different people tend to start with! I sometimes started with the hair
I don't see why you think you have a problem with lines! True they were a bit sketchy and rough in your father-in-law drawing but here they seem a lot smoother and you also know where to add shades and exactly how dark they should be in order to get a nice 3D feel if you know what I mean

Yeah. This one worked out ok. I get a bit freaked out by the undefined middle ground between photorealism and quick sketch. For this pic, I think I stopped myself just in time, but it helped that I only had a really blunt charcoal pencil. Otherwise I'm sure I'd have been fussing over this forever.

Its all good practice, and I'm learning more from every gallery I browse
