it looks kind of like a mother daughter pair. It's a very sweet picture and I like the message that goes along with it.

BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!!! YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!
love the textures!!!
I'm a bit 'on the fence' about the skulls. (more so after reading the debate).
I think they do act a little like a stamp, but the purpose they serve is something that definately needs to be addressed. without them i think the issue behind the pic would definately be focused primarily on the mum figure...
But I also think that skulls represent death, and a death sign is a little harsh as many people (young and old) can and will continue to beat cancer.
Maybe something else like the ribbon symbol instead? Just coz its more of a symbol of unity, hope and support.

ta roz!
I didnt really want to use the ribbon, there are a million pics out there that use the ribbon, I wanted the bees and the angel wings and the figures themselves to stand for hope rather than relying on the ribbon to do that. I want those skulls to have an impact, to make people think rather than for me to just do a pretty pink picture. I suppose I made the skulls into jewellery though because I wanted them wearing them, not just have them hanging over or imposing or anything like that, and I didnt want them to represent just cancer its self or to 'stamp' anyone with cancer but to sort of represent that other people have to deal with it to, it doesnt just effect the person who is ill but their friends, family, doctors and nurses, neighbours, etc. They arent being beaten by it (the skulls) but dealing with it in ways which are probably oblivious to the rest of us.
I didnt intend for them to be so controversial but in a way Im kinda glad they are, not just because it makes for a more interesting picture or taking an approach that no one else seems to have yet but it does seem to make people question a bit more.

yeah true!!
and i totally get what you mean about the ribbon!
mind you, i didnt even think of any of that when i first looked at the image, i just thought "cool skulls!!",
i think it was only after reading Keis comment (and the ensuing debate) that i thought "oooh... yeh..."

mind you, you could use the skulls along with other images too, kinda representing what people think when they hear "cancer".

...saying that, people only really think one thing.

I love your art work, I really, really do.

The girls lips look a little off to me, a little too much to the right I think, I'm not too sure they just look slightly off (mind you little things like that really get to me so it's probably nothing).

I think they do too, actually, my friend said the colour looked wrong, I think it might be the shape on them or something, lol! Those lips are a bain, I will have to fix them! Things like that get to me too so thanks for mentioning it!

Excellent work - ahem, not that I like pink or anything....cough, cough. The only thing I don't like so much is the white lips - nothing wrong with them exactly, it's just the darker ones works better and I suspect if your matched the colour of the lips to the eyelashes like you did with the other it might look a little better.

I like the skulls and hope no one persuades you to remove them.

I did have them darker originally, but dark lips on a little girl looked a bit slutty :S perhaps I'll try and make them stand out a little more.
Thanks tim!

I think the trick will be balancing them so they don't go too dark (and into the slightly uncomfortable area of slutty little girl) but still provide a good contrast with the skin colour.

i really like it but seeing as its for breast cancer i would remove the skulls, it makes me think of death, they are both wearing badges of death young and old they will die of cancer!! sorry its just a touchy subject with me as i lost my nan to cancer.
as a random sarah pic its lovely, for a breast cancer pic it makes me sad.

my nan died of cancer too, there has been a lot if it in my family on both sides. I understand what you mean but I would rather leave them in, the idea is that it doesn't just effect elderly people, which seems to be what a lot of people thing, and the Pinkitude campaign is aiming a lot towards younger woman to make them more aware. The skulls aren't necessarily saying they will both die but that everyone can be effected.
Does the whole picture make you sad or just the skull and crossbones?

kinkei In reply to Araniel [2008-11-14 14:37:57 +0000 UTC]

like i said, if it was a random pic then its lovely. as i know what its for it gives the pic a whole new feeling (if you know what i mean?!)
pink i see friendly love happiness and confidence, SURVIVAL then you throw in the skulls (cos its what u do ) and it kinda makes me feel like u have given them a stamp... of death! I know u probs just think its pretty and normally i agree but when its for stuff like this, symbolism has more of an effect, (thank you brian!!)

k so that said dont get me wrong its a good pic and i like the use of colours and style. but the skulls just dont fit, 2 me that is. to others they might feel differnt.

loves u and ur art.

I know I do throw in lots of skulls into stuff because they look cook but I did actually think for a while before putting them in, and then as I said to kat (or more she said to me!) I put the bees in to sort of balance that out. Its weird that different people see things so differently, to me Pink is just a girly colour for a cause that greatly effects women.
The skulls do symbolise cancer in this pic, but not necessarily death, there is so much more to the term 'cancer' than death, there is awareness, survival, bereavement, recovery, bravery, its not just a one sided fight and to me they stand for that as much as anything else. There is a lot of symbolism in this one, the skulls, the bees, the angel wings, the colours, the relationship between the 2 figures. I suppose it is giving them a stamp but to me it goes beyond 'terminal cancer' it is everything else that goes along with it, including survival.

Wow, look at us having an actual art debate! I'm scared!

Swirly goodness! I too love the bees!

My only critique would be that the white seems a little out of balance. I'd crop in a little tighter, losing the upper left corner.

thanks, thats actually something I hadn't noticed so thank you for pointing it out. I don't really want to loose the top corner shape of the wing there but I might add in some more white hair coming in from the top to balance it out on your suggestion ^^

they're some nice positive symbolism to balance out the deathly skulls ... it is a breast cancer competition after all.. we don't want people thinkin' there's no hope!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Araniel In reply to KatCardy [2008-11-14 13:38:38 +0000 UTC]

I wanted something to balance the skulls, I like putting skulls in things but in this they seemed to have a lot more symbolism than usual, you cant put them in a cancer pic and NOT have them mean bad stuff, so I wanted something... lifey, but not fluffy and girly...I mean there's enough pink in there, last thing I wanted was love hearts and flowers. I'm so glad someone noticed ^^ I totally thought that would be lost on people.

well it wasn't lost on me! ^-^ I think it balances them well
