Description This piece is based on a tutorial I got out of '3D World' Magazine. The tutorial files can be found at
[link]

This is a test for a future character. I'm trying to decide what colour eye to give him. Does anyone remember the movie 'Small Soldiers'? With the Gorgonites? Well there was a little character with three legs and an eye for a head. Gunna be kinda based on him, but more mechanical like the eye-guy from Quake (can't remember his name). I'm also intending him to have a similar personality to 'Luxo Jr' from Pixar. You know the little lamp guy.

Anyway, I'm running through eye colour ideas that will sort of come out as cute. Currently my bet is on the green eye, but I'd thought I'd still ask peoples opinions. If you think another colour would work better than the ones provided please mention it.

Stunning job, each eye is incredibly realistic, the lines and bumps in the Iris, the varying reflectivity and how the Cornea appears to protrude out a bit too

I remember that movie, and I can sorta picture what you have in mind, I would probably choose yellow, or even another "non-human" colour, You might as well take advantage of the fact that you can use a cool colour like yellow, red, purple etc and still get away with it since it's a fictional creature and not limited to realistic eye colours

Good point about using 'non-human' colours. This character was always meant to be friendly, and yellow, red and purple usually have connections with evil characters. So I don't know if I'd use any of them (unless I wanted to try and fight a steriotype) but I do like the thinking out of the box.

Thanks for the critique

Hehe awesome. There actually isn't a HDRI in there. Its just a plane set up with heaps of incandscence and a grid material on it. The method Gnomonology used for this was to bump the incandescence up to about 5 (generally only goes to 1) so that the reflections on the eye would pick it up much brighter.

Really liking the reflection and bump map on the veins in the eye. Nice!

Thanks Wish I could take more credit for it, but most of it was following a tutorial.

WOW that's turning out really well! Very realistic indeed

If you want my opinion - use brown eyes. Brown eyes are supposed to be the deep and soulful and cute kind.

But my favourite's always been green

Not a bad idea. I've got the file set up so that changing the colour is really easy. Might try doing a brown eye render.
Thanks
