Alan Rickman as Severus Snape from J. K. Rowling's 'Harry Potter' series. (For the 3 of you who don't know) Lily Potter in the background is not based on the actress of the movies, btw. Don't really remember her. I just drew her as I see her in my head now that I'm reading the books

(SPOILER ALERT for those who are unfamiliar with Harry Potter and still intend to see and/or watch the series)

Bit late to the party, but the wife and I finally got round to the Harry Potter films and are now reading the books. Snape is probably our favorite character. This might have something to do with Alan Rickman being one of our favorite actors, but it's also because we love ambivalent, darker characters.

Our main problem was that for some reason we never once doubted where Snape's loyalties were. We never believed for a second that he was a traitor and were sure he was a double agent working against Voldemort the whole time.

We were right of course, but that also left us a little sad. That he loved Harry's mom, Lily Potter, we never saw coming and it's a brilliant aspect. But we were really hoping/expecting Snape's true allegiance to be revealed in Deathly Hallows, with Snape joining the battle against Voldemort! Not get killed by Voldemort's pet without even raising his wand! I wanted to see Snape kick some Deatheater ass here, but...nope.

We got that Rowling wanted Snape to be a mystery until the very end and so he had to be kept in the background for most of the series. Pity. We kept wanting to see more of him, and it kept not happening.

But the revelations of his past, make him a great tragic figure, and I wanted to capture that. Throughout his life, Lily remained the driving force in his mind and heart.

-"Still, Severus? After all this time?"
-"...Always."
