Spongebob is a sea sponge, that looks like a manufactured sponge.

Hahaha it's actually a pretty simple explanation why that is xD squares are easier to draw than actual sea sponges and is much more distinct of a cartoon shape, so that's why Hillenburg went with the artificial square sponge shape instead!Β
