Description An old, OLD picture from WWI. The low quality comes from the date of the picture. Please don't give me crap about a nearly 100 year old photograph which is almost certainly beyond the reach of copyright laws. This is from the German mobilization of 1914. For those who have a hard time making it out, it is a dachshund with a German shrapnel helmet.

And so, the precursor to the EOD.

Explosives ordinance. It's a bit like the bomb squad for the SWAT team, except they blow up stuff too.

Der pickelhaube und hund!

LOVE it! I'm guessing these guys would be used for trench infiltration missions involving tunneling....

I can only imagine the FEAR they would cause in the British and French ranks...

I'd like to make some witty remark about the dachshund, but I can't think of anything :/

I thought you'd like it. People actually thought this war would be quick and painless. Home before Christmas.

Then again, that's what we think of most wars.

"Don't worry, Miss Scarlett. The war will be over in a few weeks, you'll see."

Well, probably not most. Who thought WWII would be over in a few weeks?

Or someone who didn't realize how long the previous world war had been. xD

It is. xD

And in case anyone else wants to know, that dog is long dead by now. lol

Maybe he (she?) has descendants. Hopefully they lived through the world wars. I should do some research on that dog.

Well, obviously it's dead now!

Dachshunds are one of those dogs that take forever to die, so it probably was about during both wars.

How they managed to get that dog's helmet to stay on for so long (you can find it on youtube, under the video "world war one in color) is beyond me.

I'll check. Makes we wish the US had a dog in its army with an Uncle Sam cap.
