Description I drew the lines for this last year, they can be seen on this: [link]

The owl is a Tasmanian Masked Owl. One of my roommates named him Petey. Spent several hours on it over the past few days, I never meant to paint it when I drew the lines last year, but it seemed like it would be fun.

And all the commercials I've been seeing for Legend of the Guardians probably helped. Really want to see that movie.

Compared with the lines on which it's based, this is shockingly detailed. And I don't mean the detail on the feathers which you probably slaved over. What I mean is that you've created depth with the flaming-ashes effect, and the owl's eyes are sharp and intelligent rather than so small they are blurred.

I wish that you'd given the poor thing a branch, but it works either way. There is the illusion of a branch because of the fierce grip one of it's feet is contorted into. Love it. Actually I think that I love the feet most of all out of this, they are very well done and feel quite realistic.

Another thing which I appreciate and applaud in comparing this with it's predecessor is the iron gear which the owl is holding. When I first saw the old one a few days ago, the ring was hard to distinguish and at first I thought it was a weird David Bowie/Ziggy Stardust circle. But with this you've gone an extra mile, and if I would have to pick a favorite aspect of this I would choose the gear!

The gushing is mostly done, now for the gritty stuff...Do owls have more depth to their faces? I don't generally look at owls, save for when I watch Labyrinth, so I don't really know. I just feel like it's eyes could be set farther back into it's head and it's beak protrude a little farther out of it's face. Hmmm...I believe that's all I've got for you, though.

...I love the feathers. Lots. You've made me a whole lot more excited to see that owls movie now...Like whoa...

I gave vision 3/5 because I like it I just don't know anything of it's context (Abolitionist Informer? Tell more?) but it's still pretty!
3.5/5 on originality because you can definitely see that this is based on the older lines, but the addition of color makes it an entirely new beast. Also: orange sparklies.
4.5/5 on technique because every painting I see nowadays by you shows so much growth that I can't even think about it coherently. A year and a half ago this would have still been beautiful, but you've matured a lot in making lighting behave as well as depth of figure...And I think the orange sparklies fall into this too...
5/5 on impact because it's beautiful. I've been thinking of doing a critique on this since you put it up. I just had reading and dinner to take care of and I couldn't stop reviewing the details in my head. And also it made me think of David Bowie like 3 or 4 times (Ziggy, Labyrinth, others) and anytime something prompts me to think of David Bowie I'm super stoked.

Yes.

Daaayum! What are they teaching you in college?! This is super-pretty. You've gotten, like, 100% percent better in the six-odd months I've been devwatching you!
