you know...i love phaidon press and it's fruits books, as well as their new lolita only edtion...and while yes, victorian styles do influence lolita, your drawing...looks NOTHING like lolita, i'm not saying it's bad...it's a gorgous drawing...but for someone who's so dead set on it being gothic lolita, you should really research more...MAYBE ero-loli, and thats pushing it to the absolute closest...just say "victorian" as lolita is not just a "fashion style" it's a way of life for some of the girls who wear it, and calling that lolita is quite an insult to them

call it what it is "victorian" or"victorian inspired" as it's not lolita...and no true lolita will ever veiw it as such, and more or less likely they will be serching for your drawings via your tags and titles, not people who know nothing about lolita

I honestly didn't know that by using the term 'lolita' I would offend so many people, I didn't realise the lolita community on DA was like this, so I'm sorry.
But I do certainly appreciate you taking the time to give me a well explained comment.
This particular piece is drawn from a photo and is for a website where my product is turning normal photos into lolled up ones (this is the name I had to give it) and if you see the before photo you can see it's kinda hard to make her a lolita, but when I do the next one I will research it more.

ooookay yes i can see that being difficult...rather than the "greek sleeves" (i shall call them) i could have gone for a puff, or even a full length bell sleeve :/ and given her a high modest top, and a poff skirt, essential thing in lolita garb, is a petticoat! all skirts have poof! >.< otherwise you are doomed and will get poked at by other loli's and they will laugh at your un poof-ness...sad but true...

arkaya In reply to Maile-Kitten [2007-09-26 18:13:27 +0000 UTC]

haha, thank you for that that's great...would you say puff shoulders and near essential aswell then?
But poof skirt, that's a useful tip XD

poof sleeves arn't always present, say a jsk, sometimes worn without a blouse (though rare) in summer, dosnt have sleves at all. and some OP's have long sleves that are...well standard shirt slevees with a slight bell or poet bit going on covered in lace but you never see "greek" sleeves thats a bit too risque, and really not in the proper "time line" as to what inspires lolita garb.

Please have a little bit or courtesy, I keep getting flamed as my 'lolitas' are not lolita enough - but they are just drawings, I am just drawing what I enjoy drawing and don't expect to be told it's not specifically 'lolita' who said anything about trying to be specific?! I am just drawing what I want, and how I want to draw it - I can also name things what ever the hell I want...
I have taken elements from the term and style 'lolita' and used them in the way I wanted to use them (a lot of my drawings are inspired by images from Phiadon press 'Fresh Fruits' book, where a lot of lolita and punk styles are crossed and blended).
You could call me an 'alternative lolita artist' If you look though my gallery, you will see there is a lot of my work which isn't strictly lolita but certainly has influences. It seems many people on DA are not open minded enough to realise lolita is just a fashion style....the definition of fashion is self expression and you lot aren't letting me do that.

.. Oh and if you know anything about lolita fashion, you should also know it's main influence is probably the Victorian era.

=/ Excuse me? It looks like you don't know the difference between regular criticism--no, a simple harmless comment that doesn't show 100% favor in your art, and flaming.

I know it's based off the Victorian Era, as well as the Rococo Era. I know lolita fashion like the back of my hand. I'm on the online communities everyday, have friends who wear lolita correctly. Duplica is a lolita herself, if you haven't noticed her photo gallery. And Lolita is ONLY a fashion style to those who choose to view it that way, and to others it's an actual way of life. Either way, there are limits and boundaries to what is lolita, and what isn't lolita.

I suggest you can stop your know-it-all bitchy attitude if you can't even take people's simple comments. Last time I remember, we weren't going "YOUR SHIT SUCKS!!!" We just don't feel like pretending it's lolita just because it was drawn out and colored good. It seems that many DA artists are on here only on here to get their ass kissed instead of taking in a negative comment or two.

arkaya In reply to Amanikitty [2007-06-30 16:26:53 +0000 UTC]

Look sorry, the flame comment wasn't specifically at you or about this piece.
An yes I know ~Duplica is a lolita and I respect that, I just think comments like 'that's not lolita are a bit pointless and frustrating... at least explain why it isn't lolita...
An I actually love criticism and am very appreciative when I receive it, however I do not think that 4 word statements are really crit.
Aaand I don't really think I'm being bitchy at all, or acting like I know everything...I just want to be able to draw pretty dresses and not get dumb comments every time...without any explanation!

Very very nice vector work that's not done in a vector programme Your control over colours is fantastic, as well your attention to detail.

My favourite part has to be the little dressings on her neck and wrists which really add to the overall fashion sense

All in all a work of art that holds its own against the million other vector pieces out there

Keep it up!
