They deified him later on after his death (over thousands of years later actually), due to the influence of the legends and myths told about his accomplishment in the Three Kingdoms war. If you go into a Chinese restaurant or shopping mall, you may spot a small statue of Guan Yu in there somewhere, usually on the counter.

He is most often worshiped as a god of commerce who can bring wealth to your businesses. But you can also see him worshiped in temples or police stations as a god of honor, loyalty and brotherhood. 

His divine name is "Guan Di," but most people know him by his human name Guan Yu or Guan Yunchang.

Yes, he is the same Guan Yu in the Dynasty Warriors game, but in that game, he is only a strong human, not a god yet. In SMITE, however, you see him in his god form, so he is able to stand toe to toe with the other divine beings

So yes, he is a god. You can group him among the "humans who were deified after their deaths" types of god. Another very notable god in this category is the Gautama Buddha himself, who was actually a human who obtain enlightenment and was worshiped for his teachings. Another one s is Jesus Christ, but I guess he's only partially qualified since in the Bible, he is the son of God, so he was already divine, but both Guan Yu and Gautama Buddha were born as normal human and obtain their godhood through their deeds in life

Also, fun fact, in Hawaii Shinto religion, George Washington was considered a deity similar to Guan Yu here. So I guess Hi-Rez can add him in future updates XD

haha true! but if I remember correctly there is a deity greatly inspired by him (mainly on the long beard and helberd aspects), though I don´t remember the name >< But yeah, apparently Hi-Rez decided to ust use the name Guan Yu lol

Okay, couldn´t resist to do some research XD so apparently he is worshipped as "Guan Gong" =O and the deity seemed to be directly him, deified later after his death
