They seem to be respected in military historian circles in their studies and war colleges and such,
but in the greater culture..they are mindless targets in a videogame.
in the US we think we were the best when really most of the effective
fighting in the American military was the southern boys who grew up shooting squirrels and such.
A part of the population nearing obsolescence Β every decade.
Like the Soviets it was our mass of material that won (and they at least paid for it more in terms of blood, Russians were and are tough people).
In the end the German culture was based and subordinated to duty(from the emperor down) and not the mercantile values
of Anglo/America. Such a society produces better soldiers and the Germans seemed to learn from their mistakes and then make changes right away at least in comparison to their opponents.
But they couldnt fight the whole world..

The iron crosses from 1813, 1870 and 1914 are absolutely ok,
but also the ones from 1939 were often well earned, they were not
all evil criminals.
