It may not be worth a lot in terms of money, but it has historical and sentimental worth, which is just as important.
I understand them removing the swastica after the war for newer recipiants, but I think vetreans of WWII should not be ashamed to have one. There were many men of honor, like Erwin Rommel, who fought for their country, and not the nazi party. Bravery is bravery. I have ancestors who fought on opposing sides in that war. I revere them all.

I did not know Rommel had done that. What an extrordinarily brave man he was, and a great patriot in the true sense of the word.
In the USA, the closest thing we've had to him was a great general named Robert E. Lee. Many believe the American Civil War was fought to free the slaves held in the southern part of the country. While this was one reason, the main cause of the war was the idea of states rights against federal rights. The southern states wanted less control from the central U.S. government, and more control given to individual states. While people from the North identified themselves as Americans first, the southerners thought of themselves as "North Carlinians" or "Virginians", etc rather than Americans.
Robert E. Lee was a military genius, a gentleman of honor, and an opposer of slavery. Yet he went to war on the side of the South, the slaveholding Confederacy. He did it because he felt he was a Virginian, and needed to defend his state. Like Rommel, he was a patriot defending his homeland.
