I'm sorry to learn he didn't survive the war, and died at the eastern front like many others.
He did his duty and died doing it, and that's something to be proud of.

there is no greater pride than serving one's nation!
and it makes me happy that no one has ridiculed the photo, because of his service.

Yes it´s really cool, but it would be extremely dumb to offend the veteran of someone,
I wouldn´t do that too.

Yes nearly all Germans have an ancestor that fought in the war^^
I have several, but only the pictures and letters from him survived the last 70 years...

Yes but even many surviving soldiers were killed by the Russians and Americans in camps...but everyone only knows the german crimes, not what the others did.

Yes he died near Leningrad, rather early in the east-war.
He was the watch-man at the bunker and a huge bomb or grenade hit the roof where he watched and he was immediately dead. It´s so awful, he was around 25, had two children and a wife at home and then he was dead in the east...
But of course I would never hate the normal people from Russia, I only hate the evil government and helpers they had.

It's sad that he died in a very young age, but it's sure was a honor to your family that he worked in the Reich.
Yeah I myself hate Commies but not Russians.

It was a honour indeed!
Well the big mistake of Hitler was, that he said Slavs are not Aryans, what is wrong,
if he would´ve liberated them instead of treated them bad, they would´ve fought for him.

He also was on side of the semites.

Thanks for that kind words, I´m also proud, tho the Nazis were an evil government. The german soldiers fought so bravely against all other superpowers of the world.

My Grandmother's uncle was corvette-Kaptain Herman Ehrhardt, from the Marine Brigade Ehrhardt (Freikorps), that participated in the Kapp Putsch. He allied with Hitler in the 1920's, but left the Nazis when Hitler showed histrue colors. My Grandparents left Germany before Hitler became chancellor in 1932 and moved to the US. Much of my family remained behind.

That´s so true! That´s why it makes me so sad, when I see war-movies, where they show always Germans as screaming evil monsters, that´s so extremely mean, because it´s not true! The normal soldiers, were also normal men, they had families, and wanted to live in peace. Especially after the awful 1. world war, most Germans didn´t really want another big war. But the Nazis were too powerful already. Even 1939 before the war against Poland, some generals thought about refusing to fight.

and thank you for this information, because it is difficult to find real unbiased information about those days)))

I wanted to know the truth, and as I see it was mostly like that. The normal Wehrmacht-soldiers were usually normal men and they fight so good, because they were afraid of the Russians killing their families (what they did in eastgermany is known), but sometimes they were forced to kill partisans and others.
But the real evil were the SS-men and Cleaning-troups, that came to the conquered regions, after the Wehrmacht moved on. That were the evil men, that sat in thew arm office and killed jews, while the Wehrmacht-men dies in the east.

Of course, it´s history and people see private photos, how it was really. In all the documentary-programms on TV, you see only propaganda-vids from Hitler, with comments. But of course Hitler wanted to present them as cold killing-machines.
