It won’t take long to figure out the type of person Flan is. She speaks in a formal way but that only shows her reserved character and how she doesn’t seem to regard much other people unless it intrigues her, thanks to her curious personality. She used to be straightforward and easily voice opinions that she disagreed with, but grew to be mindful of others and be more sensitive to other people's feelings and emotions. She's very attentive to her surroundings and situations, taking in information carefully, so she can think things through well and be logical. Curiously, she has an insecure side of herself that grew inside her after getting close in her romantic relationship.

History:

Flan used to live with her family in Chlorba District, within Wall Rose. Her family lived a peaceful life, with just her parents and her older sister, never having suffered consequences of attacks or infiltrations by titans. Her parents were proud of her older sister, Maya, who she looked up to, an active and optimistic, carefree girl with various talents, including physical. Her whole family expected great things from Maya and Flan believes they truly were a happy family back then.

That all changed when, one day, Maya announced that she wanted to join the Military. The parents didn’t react well to it and never approved, worried for their daughter’s safety, and Flan didn’t think her sister was in her right mind as well. Her big sister had a great future ahead of her and was choosing to confront titans, which, in Flan’s mind was committing suicide. However, her sister’s smile never disappeared and she kept talking big about the military up until she began training. After being recruited, her sister would send letters but only Flan was interested in reading them.

Flan began to try her best in order to become someone her parents could be proud of as well, studying to the point of being considered a genius. But as the letters kept coming, Flan couldn’t understand why her sister’s writing sounded so happy and excited, like she actually enjoyed being part of the Scouting Legion. Her curiosity got the best of her and she finally decided to join the army, never having ever seen a titan in her life, and not sure about her own decision. Ironically, the day she joined the training, she got word of her sister’s death.

Life as a Stationary Guard:

Thinking that the Survey Corps were suicidal, that the Military Police were boring and didn't do much, and believing that she could do best in the Stationary Guard, since it was safer than the Survey Corps and could still get interaction with the titans, she decided that she would do best in that branch. She's a hardworking one, doing all her duties to her best abilities and even attending to work that she wasn't required only to do more. She feels admiration towards her Commander, though there can be times that the two of them have some disagreements and Flan get's on the bad end of the Commander's bad humor.

Intelligence being her forte in the area, she mainly focus of weakness and strategies during missions and tries to support others as she isn't so good with her physical skills. So far, she has been lucky in her missions and hasn't suffered grave injuries or the like.

As for social life, as introverted as Flan is, she did meet some people over the past year as a guard. It was awkward for her and she didn't think she'd meet people who she could get close to, though she did meet some friends, including Natalia Holzman, from the Survey Corps, and the Commander of Military Police, Lucie Beauchesne (who she didn't think she'd become good friends with, seeing as she was a superior). However, there was one person who greatly affected her and changed her life and how she viewed everything, and that was Nicolaus Apostolos, another Stationary Guard, who she happened to meet one day on the street with a kiss, and with some development of events, the two became romantically involved. The two grew very close over the time, their love growing each day. With Nico in her life, Flan became someone more open, less colder and more emotional. She is no longer goalless, as she now desires to have a future with Nico, she the both of them can be happy. While this relationship creates fear for the loss of the loved one, it makes Flan stronger and a better person as well, and she is not engaged to him.

Reason for enlisting: Flan easily gets bored if her life falls into a routine. She wanted to be different and great, and discover what exactly made her sister proud of being part of the military.

TASK 2

Example 1:

Flan wasn’t sure what to expect when she applied for the military. She didn’t know what she was doing, unlike her sister, who sounded so sure of herself, years ago, when she told her family she was going to the army. Right now, Flan wasn’t any surer about her decision than back then when she first stepped the training grounds. It almost annoyed her how she couldn’t be decisive herself, no matter how much she thought about it and how many logical observations she pointed out. Maybe it had been her curiosity or her boredom or her desire for self-satisfaction, but she couldn’t deny that someone as herself, who had never seen a titan in he entire life and didn’t have very good combat skills, joining the military was almost ridiculous.

There was something different though. Something Flan discovered that she might enjoy. She may not know what she was doing there, but she did know something… She enjoyed 3D maneuvering. It was like magic the first time she tried balancing on her 3D gear for the first time during training. She had looked so foolish hanging upside down, but her face had shown nothing but pure excitement. For the first time, Flan looked like she was enjoying herself, her grin going from ear to ear.

That was precisely why Flan had come out during the break and was now using her 3D gear to move around across the heights. Her smile was showing on her features. The captain didn’t appreciate her going off on her own but she couldn’t help it.

“This was the reason I wavered between Stationary Guard and Scouting Legion, huh…” She muttered to herself, her smile widening momentarily.

Nico's heart wasn't the only one racing. Flan's own heart beat quicken by hearing his words and she was thankful she wasn't facing him directly because her face was surely a darker red now. It was somewhat strange since Nico flattered her like forever and had a way of words that she had slowly started to get accustomed to but for some reason, today felt different. His words felt different, even sweeter and he was calling back the day they first met. And the way he would lace his fingers together and occasionally squeeze her hand was endearing.

"I-I..." Stumbling on her own words, she chuckled to ease her own tension. "I only like Rain lilies because they remind me of you and how we met since they're related to rain." She squeezed his hand back. "And you are my salvation. I don't know what I would be if you haven't approached me that day. I wouldn't be who I am today... If I have a kind heart I only have it because you placed it there. You are the one with the kindest heart I have ever met..." Talking like that almost worried her because she could only think how she couldn't live without him.
