Description A worldbuilding thread some time ago mentioned the idea of deer living in an Equestrian analogue to Ireland and Scotland who use druidic magic and don't tolerate outsiders moving in on their land.

Thought it sounded interesting, so I gave it a go. You might see a few other ideas that came up as well. Who knows.

EDIT (6/8/13) Have a transparent background instead of that clunky block of white.

I've entertained the idea from time to time.

The concept of rulers like Celestia who might have dominion over a certain aspect of the world is interesting to think about, for the sake of world-building; if Celestia holds the sun, then perhaps the Forest Lord might hold everything green and growing. It's kinda tough to juggle all of them and decide just who does what, or how it's all balanced out, though. I have some notes or ideas on it somewhere, I'm sure.

But sometimes - given the relatively egalitarian politics and social dynamics in older Celt tribes, as well as modern-day Ireland and Scotland's history with the English Crown - I wonder if the Deer might not actually be somewhat averse to serving a single leader, preferring a sort of Clan system instead, where they keep mostly to their own business, and occasionally convene to discuss and settle disputes between villages and clans.

By which I mean getting very, very drunk and starting a brawl.

nice concepts but the deers could be separated in clans and see cernunnos more of a god, spiritual ruler, rather than an earthly ruler like ,,THE GREAT DEER THAT EVERY CLAN SHOWS RESPECT"

Yeah; ever since reading 'it's a dangerous thing going out your door,' i've adored the idea of there being a sapient race of Deer out there somewhere. Then I read End of Ponies; which made me want the series to have Goblins, Ogres, and the Great Apes appear.

In my head canon it usually ends up like this:

Griffins: the Franks, Saxons, and Visigoths. Basically the Germanic Tribes during the Dark Ages.
Goats: the Picts and the Britons. Basically the Celt's.
Goblins and Ogres: Victorian-era Brits, although they live in a area roughly analogous to Russia.
Boars: the Romuvan Baltic Tribes.
Deer: Tolkenesque Elves who live in a area analogous to Finland and Sameland.
The Ponies: The Cumani and Mongol Hordes. And also as the Athenians.
Actual Horses: the Saddle Arabians.
Wolverines: The Viking-era Norse.
The Great Apes: The Chinese Empire during the Han-Dynasty.
Minotaurs: The Spartans and Macedonians.

I like seeing how real-world cultures might fit into a world like Equestria, even having variations of culture in a single species, depending where they're from.

Monasteries across the sea, to the East, high in the mountains, are home to Tibetan Yak monks.
In the Manegolian steppes to the north, nomadic tribes of Bactrian Camels and Ponies sing to the spirits and the stars.
In the Frozen North, seafaring villages of hardy Nordic sheep sit nestled into the fjords, while reclusive tribes of Reindeer keep the forests and tundra.
In the sands of Saddle Arabia, bands of Bedouin Dromedary Camels wander the dunes, offering shelter and aid to any they cross paths with, be they camel, pony or something other.
Swampy Lowlands are home to savage boar tribes who are led by the toughest and strongest.
While on the plains of Zebrica, a band of Elephants safeguards a graveyard of bones from generations past.

There's some incredibly interesting ideas out there. It'd be nice to see the show explore something besides the Crystal Empire.
