Description Water color pencil (Caran d'Ache Supracolor), Prismacolor on Cold Pressed Fabriano 130 lb. About 7.5x11 inches.

This was a lot of fun. I think I must have been a mermaid in another life. Otherwise doing all of that flowy blowy hair and jewelry wouldn't have been such hilarious fun.

This is flawed. Unless mermaids, swimming all day with that dophin movement are stronger and more flexible than mere mortals...she couldn't be in that exact position. But I was having so much fun with the hair and jewelry and I knew I would never get them the same a second time so........She lives flawed....like mere mortals.

I have several kinds of colored pencil, two brands being a watercolor pencil. I've never used them as such, but have only used them dry and blended slightly with my fingers, mixing them with the other brands. I have been wanting to find someway to get faster so I started this one out with the watercolor pencils, adding water.

Findings: This didn't go exactly like I wanted and I'm not done experimenting. Adding water intensifies the color in a nice and sometimes surprising way. It sinks the color into the paper giving a solid base of color to work on that allows maxiumum built up of multiple layers of pencil. The cold press paper, much rougher than my usual hot press allows the paper to grab a lot of pencil, but roughly creating a looser, more spontaneous vibrant look but less polished. Trade off. What do you want. Note: wetting a fine point brush and picking up pigment from a pencil point and painting it on the paper gives the clean sharp line I have wanted from time to time in other pictures.

The soft colors on her tail are so lovely! I also think it's cute that she's wearing plastic jewelry rather than pearls or seashells.

Hmm, so maybe I should do one of this mermaid in an underwater scene then, maybe with some interesting underwater denizen or two and lots of flowing hair.

I struggle with texture as well. I really prefer as smooth a surface as possible. But for using wet media the texture is better.

I wish I had watercolor pencil for my Scythe Drawing, because I would have gotten the results I was hoping for.

It is part of the problem solving we artists go through in our creations, which paper, which medium, which technique in the handling to get what we want.........

I wish I didn't spray fixative on it, since I think I may have an idea as to how to get better blending with my Derwent Studio pencils. *sighs* well,...maybe next time.

You can always start a new one to play with. That's the fun part of art, you can always create more play things for yourself.

This is definitely colorful and thought evoking. I wonder what she's reading? Great blending and-wow-love the jewelry you gave her! The ears aren't something I often see with mermaids. Great fantasy feeling!

LOL I had a great deal of fun with that jewelry, and the hair. I was practically laughing. I hadn't planned it, it just spilled out when I started adding color and was such fun. You're right, I haven't seen pointed ears on mermaids, either, but it seemed to fit and gave her a greater delicacy, I think.

I like the pointed ears too.... Have been doing those in my work as well... Seems to me merfolk were perhaps decendents of the elves... Least thats what I think... or vice versa... ...

I do love teh mix of colors...the warms and cools work very well.... ANd i comend you on the scales... I never have the patience to do all the scales...

hmmm... so, what would be the book type of a mermaid?...
I think her colours fit her perfectly and the body has soft and harmonious lines.
The little details are also cute and never saw a mermaid with so much rings! ^^
