Description Wow! I'm submitting something that isn't Shahly's Quest, isn't black and white and isn't digital!

Jewel thought it was time for Raean to have a bath. Raean thought it was time Jewel got a good soaking.

Prismacolor pencil, aproximately 11x11, more or less. I layered the colors, used burnishing (blending an area with a white or lighter color), let the paper texture (Fabriano Artistico cold press, 130lb) show through in places and dipped a white water color pencil in water for the spray and foam.

I originally had this idea about a year ago, and drew it about 3 months ago. I couldn't possibly say how long it took to give it color there were so many starts and stops and breaks. Hope you like it.

Beautiful work. I also work in colored pencil, I think you did a fine job on this. I especially love it because of the reference to the Pern dragons. I've only started reading the series, and it's wonderful. I only wish we could have real dragons to bond with in life.

Oh yes, definitely. That would be a bit difficult. Although, where I live there are a lot of cattle. I don't think it'd be nice to pick them off without permission though. ^_^

definitely not and cattle would help, LOL.....tiny dragons would solve that problem, although you couldn't ride one, but think of all the bugs and snakes and mice they could eat for you!

I don't like it at all, I LOVE it! So very cute, the expressions on both of their faces came out adorably, and I love the fun idea. The colors look gorgeous, especially in the water, and there's so much wonderful movement in the entire piece. You did a really amazing job with this and the use of the white watercolor pencil really enhanced the piece. What kind of watercolor pencil do you use?

The first thing that catches my attention in this is that I really like the arrangement (sorry I'm having a 'what's that word?' day...I mean it's balanced and I like the flow of the line...ugh, I give up!)

The colour blending and highlights with the white pencil came out really nice, anatomy is good on the girl! I read that some people would like more texture on the dragon, I agree, but just a hint of scales would take care of that without overdoing it...ya' think so?

But what again, what really springs out at me is the flow and liveliness of the overall work...it has a beautiful sense of movement

ArtbySandiJohnson In reply to MBoulad [2007-08-09 16:12:44 +0000 UTC]

LOL it was maybe composition you were looking for. Don't you hate it when you can't get the word you want. I wanted the word ambition, the other day, when talking to the husband about the son and all I could come up with was motivation...sort of there, but not exactly as good as ambition.

Thanks for the feedback. It's always helpful. This breed of dragons, my favorite, based on the Dragons of Pern, don't have scales, but soft supple leathery skin, but now, that head, DID and DOES need something else.

MBoulad In reply to ArtbySandiJohnson [2007-08-10 00:32:48 +0000 UTC]

Yep, that's the word...composition! Thank you!

Glad to here I'm not the only one with 'whatsthatword-itis'! I hate when that happens; some days it happens a LOT... I see what you mean re motivation vs ambition. They're so close in meaning, but the flavours are different--motivation seems more positive in meaning to me

Hmm....leathery skin. Maybe a pebbly texture where the skin would be course, like close to the folds? You know that pebbly leather you see on some really well made couches, a bit like elephant skin but without all the looseness of elephant skin? Just an idea

ArtbySandiJohnson In reply to MBoulad [2007-08-12 15:05:35 +0000 UTC]

That's a great idea for the skin. Why didn't I think of that?

One of the first things that I do when I see a new submission is read through all the comments, for a number of reasons. The first is that I don't want to state what has already been discussed, and the second is to check out what other peoples impression of the work is.

On this one, Sandi, I think the girl is wonderful! Her expression and posture is full of life and vitality, and her features capture the moment with totally! This is a figure I can believe has just had water splashed on her and is enjoying every moment of it. I can hear her giggling and see her thoughts of retribution as this friendly game progresses.

Now. That being said, something about her playmate bothers me. Yes, the head is a little too large, but I'll accept the fact that it is a baby dragon, and yes, babies tend to have larger heads. They, in essence, have to grow into them, human or otherwise.

But I do have to agree with Dragoness77 in that, my, that critter needs some hair...or something. I love the way that you did the mouth, with those little pointed teeth just looking for a shoe or table leg to chew on, but, yep, she is a bald one alright. Maybe a bonnet?

Excellent job with the coloration and the mood of this piece. I'm looking forward to more.

Thanks for breaking things down for me and sharing your thoughts. I'm so glad you think that many of the aspects are working well. I'll agree that head might be a bit large for that little neck....might have been a bit of exageration there. I'm so glad the personalities seem to be coming out and everything seems natural and right. That's very important in an illustration, we know.

A bonnet? Hair? I think I need to sit down a moment. Whew! I think I have decided 'my' dragons have dorsel scales, maybe ears if they are tiny dragon cousins of some kind, and no horns or scales. Raeane didn't have horns or dorsel scales in Nod, because there was a hand there.............so I worked and worked to get her head shaped, but make her a little older in Bath with that odd little bald head. It WAS work, too, to get it to shape right. I couldn't add scales to this one if the first didn't have any; an oversight on my part, unless I wanted to pretend the scales develop with maturity, like little horns, hmmm. As I think on it, I worked a bit on those pointy little teeth, too, getting them pointy, but not too big and threatening, and to make sure that mouth was smiling. I wouldn't want anyone to be confused at to just what was in Raeane's mind or intentions.

I may have to draw some adventures for these two, and show them learning to fly/ride together and hunting, when Raeane's bigger. I like these two characters much better than Menolly and her firelizards, but don't tell any of my fellow Pern fans I said so!

Theeeeeeeere's the color I was missing

Proportions on the dragon don't seem quite right to me, possibly the head too big? I love it though as always!

ArtbySandiJohnson In reply to wolf02 [2007-08-02 12:26:28 +0000 UTC]

She's still a baby! Look at younger brother, now. Big head, right? Baby's have big heads. I'm really not sure how old she is, but I think just a few weeks, since dragons grow really fast, you know, maybe just a couple of weeks. Don't worry she'll start shaping up in a few more and be more balanced.

It is good to be back to colors, and those are my colors, bright blues, green, reds and yellows. Vivid me.

Whenever I get bold enough to use color in pictures, I'm going to have to look into these Prismacolor pencils. I see people do amazing things with them!

Raean's reflection is very well done, though it seems there should be more red from her shirt showing up. And there's very little reflection from Jewel...

I love the blend of colors, and I'll have to keep that white watercolor pencil idea in mind for the day I find colors.
